Expert opinion

The 488, launched in 2015, was Ferrari’s first turbocharged engine in almost 40 years (the last one was the F40). Bringing in forced induction might have had purists’ knees knocking in fear, but they needn’t have worried – the 488 was a triumph from the get-go.

The twin IHI turbos delivered lag-free punch, giving the 3.9-litre flat-plane V8 the sort of throttle response to rival the 488’s naturally aspirated 458 Italia predecessor, yet torque was up by 43 per cent. On top of that, the 488 was 100kg lighter than the 458, giving the car a top speed of 205mph, and 0-62mph sprint of 3.0 seconds dead and a standing quarter time in the low 10s.

If that wasn’t rapid enough for you, the track-biased 488 Pista came along in 2018, with 710hp and a raft of handling enhancements that shaved 1.5 seconds off the car’s time around Ferrari’s Fiorano test track.

Oh, and if you want to ensure that as many people as possible see you while you’re driving your 488, you can get a convertible version, too. The Spider made its debut at the Frankfurt show in autumn 2015, and despite an extra 50kg to haul around, its top speed was only down by 3mph to a seriously respectable 202mph.
