Yes, yes, we’re a little late to the party on Monterey Car Week. But can you blame us? While the world’s elite were spilling champagne over the latest and greatest from the world’s leading brands, we were living it up with thousands of PHers at our Annual Service bash in Bicester. But with both events now in our dust, we thought it a good idea to dedicate this week’s episode of The Gassing Station podcast to the good and not-so-good reveals from another bumper Friday at Pebble Beach.
As ever, Car Week wasn’t short on seismic announcements. The Revuelto Super Veloce was one of them, bringing more power and even more aggressive looks to Lamborghini’s superb V12 supercar, as well as a road-going version of the Land Rover Defender Dakar racer and Gordon Murray’s latest homage to the F1 with the creatively-named S1. Meanwhile, McLaren's announcement of its first manual in 30 years with the MCL 6GT was one of the event’s biggest surprises, as was Singer’s collaboration with Louis Vuitton, albeit for all the wrong reasons. And that’s just scratching the surface of a Car Week brimming with stuff we’d desperately love to get our hands on - and the odd one we’d rather never, ever see again.
Bringing us back down to earth is PHer Prince Rupert, who’s looking to replace their Maserati GranSport with “something two-seat, sporting, interesting, convertible and with a great sounding engine” for £60,000. They previously owned (and adored) a TVR Tuscan, which was written off before the Maser replaced it, so whatever we find needs to feel as special as Blackpool’s finest while doing away with all the foibles of a hand-built British sports car.
Sam thinks this Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster fits the bill nicely, with only 22,000 miles on the clock and coming in some £10k under budget. I, however, think this Porsche 987 Boxster Spyder easily ticks the ‘sporting’ and ‘great sounding engine’ boxes, and is certainly interesting to those in the know. It may not wow the Monterey crowd, but you’ll be welcomed with open arms at a PH Sunday Service. Just don’t forget to whack our pod on for the journey over...
