You won’t be the only one baffled by the Jensen Interceptor’s revival as a track-only super coupe. Owners of the original Interceptor preferred long stretches of the M1 to the confines of a racing circuit when it came to finding out what their V8 brute could do, partly because it was easier to shake off pursuing Rover police cars that way. But as ridiculous as a track-going Interceptor sounds, it could be a vital step towards a range of road cars, as we’ll dig into in this week’s episode of The Gassing Station podcast.
As you may have seen, the GTX sort of looks like a Pikes Peak version of the Jaguar Type-01. Only it’s packing an LS-based 6.9-litre supercharged V8 with 973hp in its current tune - though Jensen International Automotive (or JIA) says 1,200hp is achievable before things start to go bang. It also comes with a sequential gearbox, manually adjustable Nitron dampers and lots more motorsport hardware. But above all, it’s actually real and makes an almighty racket to prove it, with the hope being that it whips up enough investor interest to fund a broader (and more expensive to develop) road car lineup. Billionaires of PH, do your thing.
Keeping things retro, PHer wjs1968 is after a coupe from the late '70s to mid-'80s and has a budget of £15,000 to play with. Sam’s mind immediately went to this Rover SD1, which has been owned by the same family since 1980. While there’s some doubt around the 9,500 miles it’s currently showing, it looks to be in wonderful nick (which is saying something for an old 3500) and comes right in budget at £14,995. But if the idea of an old Rover terrifies you, then let me present you with this Ford Capri 2.8 Injection. Yes, it has covered a few more miles and has two fewer cylinders, but it’s a fine example of a proper '80s icon nonetheless. Either fits the bill nicely, though you can add your own suggestions to the topic here.
Once you’ve done that, have a look through Starsky80’s topic on future cult classics. Granted, there are a few posts conflating modern classics and cult classics, but there are still plenty of good suggestions, like the original BMW i3, Suzuki Swift Sport and Honda E. Who knows, maybe the reborn Interceptor will make its way onto the list in a few decades...
