Evidently, they like playing their cards close to their chest at Lexus. Already this summer we had the mysterious V8s at Goodwood, both road car and racer, that looked like the most interesting Lexuses since the LFA. But we weren’t told anything about them, not even a name. They followed the Electrified Sport concept of early 2022, a car we were promised by 2030 - but that was back when the future looked a lot rosier for electric. Even then, assurances were vague and details hard to come by.
And now there’s this, another stunning two-door Lexus that it doesn’t really want to say anything about. It’s called the Sport Concept (imaginative), and it’s just been revealed at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, the flagship get-together of Monterey Car Week. Lexus has published, and this is no joke, 65 words on the new car. So you’ll have to excuse us filling in the gaps.
For what it’s worth Lexus says the ‘progressively styled, future-focused yet truly authentic sportscar signals the way forward for Lexus design’, which usually means you’ll see the light design on a new generation of SUVs, but Toyota as a whole seems so committed to interesting cars of all shapes and sizes that we’ll assume they mean business with something that looks like this.
Especially as the XXS press release goes on to add the Sport Concept ‘blends dynamic and emotional elements into a vision for a next generation sports car’. Which sounds promising. Patently, we’ve all seen wilder show cars in our time, but that’s a good thing here; you can see where numberplates could go on, how it might just get over speed bumps, where the golf clubs would go (it’s still a Lexus, after all) and so on. Though there’s really nothing else to say right now beyond what we think it might be. No engine specs, no interior images, no guarantees. But Lexus has to do something soon, doesn’t it? One to keep an eye and keep fingers crossed for - can’t have enough two-door sports cars in the world, after all…
