MG HS boot won’t stop when closing

That seemed to stop when it hits the obstruction. Were you expecting it to have an optical sensor that refuses to shut if there's something in the opening?

As above, seems to do exactly what would be expected of it, senses an increase in torque/motor current & backs off.

If it was fully up & decided to randomly close itself without any input then there does appear to be an issue.

For tailgates/hatches with support struts it's usually a sign that one or both have become defective & need replacing.
Just done that on Mrs.p's 307 which had got to the point that it wouldn't stay up & was worse in cold weather.

If it's electrically controlled then you might be best posting on an MG HS specific forum although a quick google suggests the usual problem is not staying shut.

Yes, I am expecting it to stop when it senses an object in its path. That’s what my Audi and Focus both did? This doesn’t stop, it hits the object, it couldn’t shut as the object is over the boot. It will continue to try and close down if I hit close.

It comes down with some force, I assumed there would be similar sensors on all tailgates in case there was a child or similar standing under the boot.

It did, it "senses the object in its path" by the increased torque/current on the closing motor when the hatch hits the obstruction.

ETA.
Don't forget these cars are made in China & generally they use technology/modes of operation that may well be 10 to 20 years behind their European counterparts.

Back then actuated hatches were a rarity at best & all will have operated like this back then.

On top of this reliability may not be their strong-suit.

Just remember cheap is normally cheap for a reason.
