There is surely no coincidence about this. Two days on from the launch of the new X3 - the latest in a long line of BMWs seemingly designed to test our faith in the brand - Manhart has unveiled a powered-up interpretation of its better-looking predecessor. And while we weren’t necessarily fans of the previous X3 M, which inevitably suffered in comparison with the M3 that it shared so much with, we’re inclined to look upon it more kindly now. Perfect timing, then.
Needless to say, the X3 M did not seem like it wanted for power. After all, it had the same 510hp the M3 started with, and that amount was what any sane person would call adequate. But that hasn’t prevented Manhart from seeking out more, and, as you might expect, the MHX3 650 is called the MHX3 650 because it coaxes 650hp from the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six. Oh and 590lb ft of torque, both courtesy of a new MHtronik auxiliary control unit. The tuner doesn’t say how much quicker that makes the X3 M, but we’re going to assume ‘lots’.
Predictably, this new level of power needed a new level of noise, hence the improved flow of a valve-controlled stainless steel exhaust system, ‘which is connected to Manhart sports downpipes with 200 cell HJS catalytic converters and ends in four 100mm diameter carbon-coated tailpipes.’ You can even have ceramic-coated ones, if you wish - alongside a carbon aero kit comprised of front splitter and side skirts (each with side fins) as well as a roof spoiler and new rear diffuser. And some additional carbon trim bits for the interior, too.
No less divisive ought to be the H&R lowering springs, which drop the X3 M by around 30mm. Unsurprisingly, Manhart reckons this will result in ‘significantly optimised cornering dynamics’ - although on the basis that the standard model struggled less with corners and more with rattling your fillings out, you might want to think long and hard about taking the plunge. Especially if you’re planning on taking advantage of the 22-inch multi-spoke wheels, which add 255/35ZR22 and 295/30ZR22 tyres to your shopping list. Either way, Manhart will welcome a call to discuss prices - or you could just continue waiting for the new M50 xDrive model to go on sale. Talk about a rock and a hard place, eh...
