Once upon a time (in 2016), the BMW M4 GTS was as wild and as outlandish as an M car got, complete with orange-tinted wheels, matching roll cage and carbon rear wing. These days it looks almost modest given the rest of the M lineup. G-Power has already dabbled with the current generation of M3 and M4 (making, among other things, a 720hp Touring); now it’s decided to evoke the old GTS with this, the G4M Bi-Turbo.
Obviously it’s got loads more power, because that’s what G-Power does and this S58 3.0-litre already has a reputation for massive gains with some choice mods. So with nothing more than G-Power’s software, racier cats, sports downpipes and an exhaust, this is a 700hp M4. That’s almost 200hp more than a standard Competition with not all that much changed; 627lb ft on top is almost another 150 points extra. It’s going to be ludicrously fast.
But that's only part of it. The important stuff is G-Power’s carbon add-ons, including the ‘GP Shrunken’ front corners, GP Dynamic front spoiler, a front grille like a CSL, the GP Venturi bonnet and rear wing. Apparently, the bonnet boasts Dynamic Venting tech which actually improves thermal management in the engine bay. They can all be visible carbon or painted, and there are side skirts not fitted to this car available. Just in case the standard car wants for impact.
The wheels are G-Power’s ‘tried and tested’ Hurricane RR forged rims, an inch larger than standard at 20-/21-inch and a fraction wider at 285-/295-section front and rear. Big, yes, but with 700hp to manage you’ll probably want as much contact patch as possible. The orange tint that brings to mind the old GTS is designed to ‘lend a splash of colour to the otherwise greyish white coupe’ - talk about telling it like it is - and a similar colour can be found under the bonnet. With even more carbon, of course.
It won’t be for everyone, sure, though that’s always how tuning goes. What feels fairly unavoidable is just how much power can be generated from that twin-turbo engine for so relatively little. While the entire G4M twin-turbo conversion is €30,000, the good stuff to get to 700hp is less than half that; at current exchange rates, the €14,300 G-Power asks is just under £12k.
Obviously that sort of work will be possible in the UK as well, and we know from prior experience that the M3 is capable of handling it. Could be quite hard to resist with the earliest G8xs out of warranty this year and already at £50k. But maybe go easy on the orange.
