Feel free to move this mods, but there is no forum for exploded terror weapons on PH.

I was given this today by a nice old chap who said that it was was part of a V2 that exploded (thankfully) above his house in South East London in 1944. I have been squinting at videos on You Tube but none get close enough to confirm what bit it might be from.

Any ideas?

Probably will end up in the "Planes, Boats, Trains" forum.

I reckon it's part of one of the fuel (propelant or oxidiser) tanks.

Quite a few V2s disintegrated before they impacted. They were descending at around 4,000 mph so many broke up due to aerodynamic stresses.

Both the Science Museum and the RAF Museum have complete V2s in their collection andf they might be able to identify exactly what part of the weapon this piece comes from.

Apparently, more Germans (and POW's) were killed building the V1 and V2 rockets, than were killed by them.

Yes, I know its a bit of junk and I will be royally ripped into by all female members of my family but having looked at a few of the videos I think that its a real piece of history. The first man made object in space, direct relative of Saturn 5 etc etc.

The effort they put into building the factories and making the fuel for these distracted the Nazis from building conventional weapons and ironically may have helped shorten the war.

Indeed; going to such effort to kill a few non-combatants in the wrong country achieved very little. But then with hindsight he'd have stopped in 1941 and taken his winnings.

If it really is part of a V2, it certainly isn't junk. It's a piece of history that I'd be envious of!

I have emailed the pictures to a couple of V2 experts I found on line so we'll see if they can add anything.
There is a human side to this piece as well. The Nazis used prisoners, Jews, slaves etc to build the rockets so I am looking at the rivets and split pins thinking "what hungry frightened unfortunate so and so made that..." it works on many levels.

Then again it might prove to be part of a municipal water tank...!

Wow it turns out that V2 experts read email late into the night. Had it confirmed. The messed up aluminium is part of a fuel tank and the bracket attached it to the fuselage. Thanks to v2rocket.com for info. They sent a picture too but only on iPhone at the moment. Will post here if people interested.
I' m going to cherish my bit of history

Result thumbup

Any more details on date/location? My father came within 400 yards of a V2 in Forest Gate (though that reached the ground)

There's a map in the net somewhere that shows all the sites.

It exploded over Belvedere close to border with Bexleyheath. The best timing is only 1944 though. Have sent email to the site you mention to see if he knows the date.

Respect due to EricMc by the way. He identified the piece as part of a fuel tank straight away!

Good guess by me.

To be honest, I've seen quite a few preserved V2s over the years and even have an old Revell model which contains all the innards so I was a bit familiar with the way the tanks look - even if that one was a bit mangled.

It definitely is not a piece of junk. It has genuine historic value and I am sure quite a few museums would be interested in it.

Just to round this tale off nicely. A picture of the location of the V2 portion.

V2s started being launched towards London in September 1944, if that's of any help.
