I'm not one for giving away too much personal information as I worry about it biting me in the arse but on the odd occassion I think sod it.

So anyway to update. I'm still toying with the idea of getting a watch from the States and the missus is going this week as it goes and I asked her to get it for me and she still says no.

Sat at the missus sister's with her step mum and a few other people for a kid's birthday party I foolishly try to make my missus feel guilty and guilt her into bring the watch back for me. What could go wrong. Women do it to us all the time in social situations.

So I pipe up that the missus is going away and she won't bring me back anything to much awww's and she should's as I'd do it for her. I feel a win coming on I'm feeling smug a new watch is within my grasp.

The missus says I can't have another watch. Oh a watch they all say. What's wrong with the one on my wrist. Well nothing it is perfectly fine I just want this next one. I'm starting to feel the tide turn and this kid's party is turning into a car crash where everything goes very slow.

How much is this one you want Miguel? The missus pipes up £700 before I could lie and say £200 lol. Too much gasps and how much's?!?!

Back ground history. The sister and the step mum have made some ultra stty choices with men in the past and have several kids living on benefits and continue to make stty choices. They do however have flat screen tvs and the child's birthday in question the child was given a brand new flat screen tv. I've still got an old box tv with a green screen because the tube has gone. I like watches and trainers that's what I spend my money on.

I then have to sit and endure a 30 min lecture how they can't afford luxuries. After a while I'm sat there rather annoyed and thinking well who's choice was it to get knocked up more than once by an idiot who can't find a job. You complain about money yet you buy an 8 year old a flat screen tv.

Now foolishly I wore my Explorer to this gathering and they ask me what is the one I have on now. Couldn't hide it under a sleeve being as its been one of the hottest days of the year so I say an Explorer. The step mum looks at the dial and sees the Rolex and then all hell breaks loose. they can't afford that blah blah, her pension isn't enough to live on etc etc and I'll be the same.

By this point I'd had enough and had to ask them what makes them think I'm spending my lasts on a watch? I have savings, I have a pension and I brought it "wisely". Just because you make idiot decisions doesn't mean I do. If I need to I can release this asset and see a big chunk if not all of my money back. A bit more dumb reasoning from them and wild assumptions later and I actually had to nudge the missus to go.

Not sure what I wanted to achieve but fancied getting it off my chest.

Oh you should have heard the list of things I had shouted at me that I should have bought when I bought my watch, by the GF's mum.

Fortunately, the GF said "mum, it's his money, not ours, he can do with it as he likes" !

I would have left.(actualy I probably wouldnt be there in the first place I don't go anywhere near my OH family for similar reasons )
Its your money you can do what you want with it. I would also point that out to you mrs and make sure she bought you the watch you are after.

Not a lot of info to go on but she should not be dictating how you spend your cash IMO smile

Glad it's not just me. The missus to be fair thought it was hilarious.

A/ because I got made to look a fool for asking about another watch.

and

B/ because she is tired of hearing about them moaning about their dead end boyfriends who don't contribute anything.

Don't know why you are being shy then. If they are going to gang up on you then they are ripe for taking the piss out of. Obviously its bad tatse to discuss prices of things but I think sometimes there are exceptions to the rule.
I think you should point it out to them every time you buy something expensive. If they are going to be like that just wind them up smile

Cheers guys. I need a bit of male support lol. Its been brewing on my mind since the weekend.

There isn't much more information to go on. I wouldn't say I'm loaded and I wouldn't say I've constantly been flushed with cash but my parents told me one thing well they told me loads lol but one thing was don't get myself into anything I can't get myself out of quickly.

They just finance and finance and buy utter crap that has no value at all. I think my trainers are about the only things which are of little to no asset value. Pretty much everything else I spend my money on I can make it back or make back enough to hold me for whatever problem has arisen.

Haha that thought did cross my mind. I'll probably even quote the RRP not what I actually paid next time.

But you're right it is bad taste and to be fair it kind of backfired on me even mentioning it in the first place. I just see things differently. If I see someone with something flash I don't think jealous thoughts. I just think how can I get to that level where I can afford one. If its stupidly out of my league I just put it out my mind. I'm not going to cripple myself to get a Patek for example.

To most people £700 on a watch is daft....to even start up a conversation about how you cant get one, in that company, is equally daft.

You have justified it yourself in your OP. It's all about priorities.

I'm a student and most of my friends balk when I tell them I paid £265 for a second hand Seiko.

Then all I have to do is point out I don't have a Mac, an iphone, an ipod or a playstation 3 all of which most of them have (or a combination of). I also don't waste money on drugs like many of them, I don't wear designer clothes/shades like many of them, I don't go on 'tour' holidays like most of them, and I don't even smoke anymore.

I also work two jobs, so if I want to splash my hard earned on a watch, I fking well will.

I'd rather spend £1000 on an asset that I can get £950 out of, than £50 on something that has no resale value.

The loss is the same, but hey: shiny stuff.

I'm the same. Well I have a apple mac but I bought that more because I'm a complete moron with computers and wanted something that was relatively idiot proof for music and for the past 4 years it has been. No complaints. The fact I turn it on and it works is worth the couple of extra hundred quid spread over 4 years.

Going off watches as to be fair this quote doesn't really apply to luxury items which is what they are but again my parents tell me you buy cheap you buy twice. They'll happily spend money on a whole heap of crap that breaks after x amount of months and then repeat the process again and again. Now I know it isn't simple sometimes to lay out big amounts of cash in one go and occassionally you buy something crap to tide you over but for the most part they could just do without and save up for a short period of time.

I'm clearly off on one now lol.

I'm of the same mindset guys. Or rather, my priorities are more closely aligned with yours than it would appear your OH's family's are.

I worked to afford my MacBook, because I wanted it. To me, a Mac offered a reliable computer for my 5 years studying, and to me this was worth paying more for. The same goes for watches. Yes, some are expensive, but I'm not in debt for them and they'll hopefully carry an asset value to offset the purchase cost. Above all, I like them.

It's about what you value and what you spend your money on. If you're sensible - like you said, don't dig yourself into a hole you can't get out of - then I see no reason why anyone can't use their own money to buy whatever the hell they want with it.

fk them. If you ever want and can afford a Patek, just fking do it and let them know you did it. In fact, buy two, place one on the floor, take out a hammer and smash it in front of them. (Make sure it's not a rare one.) And rant about how much they spent on their crap. I bet they go on holidays. That's a fking waste of money if we're talking about wasting money. At least you can sell a watch when you get bored of it; try selling a crap donkey or model of the Eiffel Tower to recoup your holiday costs.

In fact, next time they ask what you've been up to say you've been looking at buying a new V8 Vantage and are tempted to place an order. You don't have to go through the process but it'll eat away in their jealous heads for months.

In the meantime, every time you see them, make sure you are wearing a different watch. Buy a st load of cheapos from Argos. They'll just assume you paid hundreds and hundreds.

Indeed, it's insignificant in the scheme of things.
