I drove to Manchester yesterday, Stratstones.

It's a pig of a journey, through Stockport & Levenshulme and they were closed when I got there (4.45 due to traffic). I live in Stoke, roughly the same distance from Stratstones, Evans Halshaw and Grey Paul.

There wasn't anything really in the range I was looking for (£30k) but there was a tatty 44000 V plate on the forecourt, complete with scraped wheelarch, scraped alloys, hole in passenger seat.

There wasn't a price on it but I hope it's not typical!! It was dark blue (with grey scratches).

I've emailed one of the classifieds on pistonheads - if I go for a private sale what do I need to ask and check? Should I then take it to a dealer to be checked over?

Yours enquiringly,

rico

Only thing i can offer is to make sure you get a private sale car checked over.

I'm sure others on this forum will recommend the right person to do the inspection.

private purchase should not be a big problem.........if the car has a full history the dealers tend to know att the cars individually and should be able to give you its full history including problems with the car

Warranty is very expensive 1400 plus VAT

I don't think the car you saw at Stratstones is typical of Maser dealers' stock. All the cars I viewed (at a budget not disimilar to yours) were mint. It's been covered on another thread but by all accounts most V plate cars were probably early demonstrators, so that could explain its condition.

A point to keep in mind is that in my experience you can take Maser dealers' sticker price with a pinch of salt, they are definitely willing to enter into a good old fashioned haggle. You might be surprised what you can get for your money! I reckon for your budget you can get a nice 2000 model year car with warranty from a dealer. An '01 may be a bit of a stretch from a dealer but certainly should be achievable privately.

It goes without saying if buying privately don't touch anything without a full history and warranty cover.

Good luck.

I would agree with the comments made by chris n...........you should get a nice 2000/1 3200 from a dealer for around 30/31k

If you can wait my 2001 FMSH & trident warrantied car will be for sale but later in the year. I bought it knowing that I would move it on after 9 months so that the new owner could have 3 months Maserati warranty. It is turning into a swimming pool for next year you see. I bought it from Meridien March 31st and will show you the reciepts to show that at your budget it will save you a few K. The car is known to this forum so you can ask about, but as I said it will be towards the end of the year but arm twisting for time may be possible.

Buying from a dealer carries an excess of around 2-5k depending the year. Im selling mine now for 31k as 2001 car. Dealer would try and sell it for 35k im told!

Link's not working for me - I get the autotrader site but no details.

Give us a clue and I'll do a normal search.

I've tried a private seller only search but nothing between 30 and 40 k shows up.
