Both. Given the fact that a virus is going to do nothing good for you or your PC and there are laws about sending viruses, spam, hacking (God knows how effective these laws are, though).

People aren't sending you it. Thats what the virus does. Distributes itself automatically from PC to PC.

A virus will be in there. Don't open any attachments. If you get one from a friend, ask them if they sent it to you. Viruses are spoofing addresses, so you may get legit sounding emails spoofed from an email address you know which may seem genuine (like one from the admin of a forum) but it's the virus spoofing it with a virus attachment.

Also a good idea to run decent AV software.... AND KEEP IT UP TO DATE!!!
