Printer problem

I only use this comp for internet access...so have never really bothered with my printer not working. It's a Lexmark Z22 - and last time it worked properly was about 2.5 years ago...it just stopped printing, even though the cartridges were full.
I decided this weekend I'd try and fix it
and on the assumption that the ink cartridges had dried up, got a replacement black ink cartridge as a test.
Amazingly it worked...although I've had to run through the cleaning process a few times - however, leave it alone for 30 mins and no ink comes out....until I run the cleaning process again.
Slightly puzzled how the ink can dry up so quickly...but realise this was the original problem.
Any ideas folks ?
