CoolPix 3100 tech help please

I've just spent all day polishing the TVR with the idea that I can take some nice photos using the place I'm working at as a nice backdrop, with my mates Nikon 3100.
The camera was working fine earlier on today, but now I'm at work it is just coming up with the message "This card cannot be used"
It won't let me format the card (unable to select the CF format option) and none of the previously stored pics are available either.
It's like the card has corrupted for some reason.
My only theory is that when a picture was taken earlier today and the batteries ran out as soon as the pic was taken, it didn't manage to complete the save and has buggered the CF card.
By the way, the card is a SanDisk 128Mb.
Any help on how to sort this would be much appreciated.
