Some advice please....

Just looking at getting into photography, very little experience and knowledge, so looking for some straightforward advice on lens prices. I've bought myself a second hand camera to get started (EOS 400D), now looking for a longer lens to go with it....

Can I please ask why these two lens are so hugly different in value:

I appreciate they are different, but why the huge price difference? Is it just down to 'quality' or am I missing something more obvious?

'Fast' lenses liike the f2.8 have bigger glass elements - all things being equal these cost more to make. In addition they tend to be higher quality optically too.

Seems the 'off white' lens is professional quality and priced accordingly....

I wont be buying them then....

If you want a longer lens for little money you really can't go wrong with the Canon 55-250 IS, they come for as little as £130 new and really are a cracking little lens.

The L lenses are weather sealed and better build quality. I have the MKII 70-200f2.8IS, it truly is one amazing lens. Pin sharp, even at 200mm. Tried "cheaper" alternatives in the past before deciding on the L's, was always a bit disappointed with the quality the others I had tried. The good thing is you can always start of within budget and sell/move on once you decide you want something better.
