mercedes warranty

I've just bought a 2004 CL500. It's done 68k miles. FMBSH to 2009, and then last 18mth with mercedes specialist.

Is it possible to put this car under an official mercedes warranty (it's not currently under their extended warranty programme) or will I need to go down the 3rd party route with the likes of warrantywise (who've quoted me £1,500 for 2yrs warranty, zero excess and covering wear&tear).

While I'm tempted to leave the warranty (especially given the previous owner had the abc pump/fluid etc replaced at a maindealer just a couple of months ago) but I feel like I should get one for peace of mind.

However, I'd also be interested in replies to this, having just bought a 2004 CLK55. I tried Warranty Direct and they wanted £800 for 1 year plus another £60 to satisfy themselves there's no problems right now. Reading the small print, I got the feeling they'd try to wriggle out of any claims, thus the cost would be a waste of money. I've not bought any warranty yet and I'm pretty relaxed about it, as I can't foresee any problems, but like you, some peace of mind is always a good thing.

Chaps, its worth buying the Tier one Mercedes warranty no doubt. I know a chap who bought a 2004 SL55 and he's already had 5K spent on his car via the MB warranty..
It's an expensive warranty, but well worth it

I looked at warrantydirect, but the warrantywise option looked to give me more thorough cover (albeit marginally more expensive).

Re the tier 1 warranty. I'm definitely keen to look into this option - but I don't know whether I can get the car under this warranty.

I'm trying to establish whether the Merc warranties are like Porsche warranties (where any Porsche subject to age, mileage and an inspection can be put under the OPC warranty) or is the only way to get a Merc warranty to purchase a car already under an extended Merc warranty and then keep renewing it?

I looked into this last year. If I recall correctly Mercedes offer 3 different levels of cover tier 1 being the most comprehensive. You can only purchase the cover from Mercedes directly. If the car is not covered by an existing Mercedes warranty then the new cover will have a period of one month after purchase where new claims will not be allowed. I had conflicting advice from the dealer network and Mercedes about Pre warranty inspections, I think the final outcome was that the car would need an inspection by a main dealer before issuing cover. The car must have been serviced in accordance with Mercedes guidelines but I can't remember if they would cover a car without a full main dealer history.

The cost of covering an SL 500 a year ago on a tier 1 basis with 30000 miles on the clock was around £1500 pa if that gives some indication of cost, the warranty can also be purchased on a monthly basis.

I've called Mercedes. Per above post, I can put the car under a Mercedes warranty, but it wouldn't start for 30days and (obviously) wouldn't cover any faults present at initiation of the warranty.

For those interested, costs of a Mercedes warranty on 68k mile, 2004, CL500 were:

Tier 1: 2038, 1816, 1594
Tier 2: 1857, 1655, 1453
Driveline: 1140, 1029, 908

Prices in GBP and based on zero, 100 and 250 excess respectively.

Those prices are steep, in my opinion. I think I'm going to go with the WarrantyWise option.
