Quick Q regarding Nikon 'Nifty Fifty'

Chaps, currently on holiday in Tenerife (yes, the weather is fantastic thanks) and have seen in one of those shops that seems to sell a load of photographic stuff 'cheap'; a Nikon Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 lens for €115. It's new, of that there is no doubt. It appears to be the genuine article, the right 'weight', 'feel' and lens cap/cover. The bloke swears it carries the correct paperwork for an 'international' guarantee.

My question is twofold:

a) Is it too cheap to be genuine?

b) Even if it's a copy/fake is it worth a punt at this money?

For the record, I've recently purchased a Nikon D5000 twin lens kit from Jessops and am over the moon with it.

Buy or walk?

I thought they were about £80, so the price seems right to me.

The big jump is when it's f1.4.

Remember than on a DX sensor (as you have) it's more of a portrait lens than a standard lens. I have a 50mm but it's rarely used.

£95 cheapest, £105 from Warehouse Express, so seems to be fairly priced.
It doesn't have auto focus on a few cameras though, such as my D5000

Nifty 50 is a damn good lens. Go buy - price seems right.

Nikkor 50mm 1.4 is the best lens I've ever used (by a mile), but there isn't a huge gap between the 1.8 and the 1.4.

I got one for Christmas from my wife... love it to bits (and the wife isn't bad, either).



Around £105 from Jessops etc.

I think I paid about £80 for mine and its a fantastic lens.
Auto focuses on my D7000 too but I always use it in manual.

Do remember, as pointed out above, that it won't auto-focus on your camera though.

Go for the 1.4, it'll autofocus on that body and is twice the lens, if not more.

It is twice the price though!

Yep, it's for this exact reason I ended up discounting the 50mm 1.8 and looking for either a 50mm 1.4 or 35mm 1.8. Plumped for the 35mm 1.8 in the end and don't regret it for a second. If you can get one of those for a decent price then go for it. They start at around £160 here but supply is very short right now.
