do you need to backup your hard-drive before doing so?

I've got 55gb of stuff that i don't fancy copying over to cdrs...

Or can i go ahead and get the upgrade and bung the cd in and enjoy?

Cheers all

Rico - Panther is the latest version of OSX, so I'm not sure what you're upgrading from. Previous version of OSX was called Jaguar. If you're upgrading an already OSX system, eg. Jaguar to Panther I'd recommend that you check your hard drives first using either Apple's DiskUtility, DiskWarrior or TechtoolPro. If you are currently running OSX you ought to repair permissions using disk utility.
If you get a clean pass with everything you shouldn't need to back up everything, although I would back-up any absolutely must-have files first - 'cos I'm cautious.
I hope you've got broadband, as once you've installed Panther you really MUST download the latest upgrades via Software Update which should bring you up to version 10.3.4 (I think).
One other thing, make sure you've got loads of RAM - if you haven't the installation will probably fail.
Good luck, Paul

I have read that it's recommended to perform a clean install of Panther, rather than just the upgrade option. IIRC, one of the iLife programmes, or possibly Safari gets terribly temperamental if you don't.
Check the paperwork. If it's like OS9, a clean install will put all your old bits in an "old system file" and you can manually compare folders

Hi Andy

The usual disclaimers apply. I would back up anything you value, just to be on the safe side. Having said that, I didn't bother :jumpsinwithtwofeetsmily: and it all worked just fine. As Paul already mentions, I had read somewhere it's a good idea to 'repair disk permissions' with the 'Disk Utility' before upgrading, just to do a little housekeeping. The latest version is 10.3.3. I think you will be fine with that amount of RAM. Check Apple support page or macintouch.com for any possible probs.

HTH
Cheers

Ok all installed and working.

Did a full backup of documents but didn't need it

Panther is a definite upgrade from the previous OS-X. lots of little things that don't mean a lot individually but make the working of it so much better.

Whereas microsoft seem to feck up every version of Windows, Apple come along with a lot better product every time.

I'm never going back to Windows
