Is it just me or are they too fabulous? I know they have talented photographers but that shot of all the mini's moving at exactly the same speed or the picture taken perfectly from a different car... It just doesn't add up for me.

Anyone care to shed some light if they are real or stationery and then fiddled with digitally?

Mostly real – usually only Mac'd to optimise reproduction quality for printing presses.

It's like Paul Daniels's tricks – all pretty simple once you know how they're done. Now, that's magic.

What special techniques do you want to know about or learn?

There are a couple of shots in there that just don't ring true - take last months main image for the DB9 - how on earth have they managed to take the shot round that corner? I could guess them taking a shot from a leading car, but it seems a little fantastic...

Yeah. i said in another thread about evo. Their photographers really are world class and they don't use photoshop out of principle. They'll only occasionally use photoshop to edit out a tree or bollard if it looks shit.

Fantastic photos aren't they!!!

Rico, I can see how the photographers can be that good, but pictures are only as good as the subjects... Take this month's shot of the mini's starting away from the line - it'd be nigh on impossible to get that shot (even with only one car out of focus).

I stand by my opinion that the shots are taken and then photoshopped later (i.e. the car shot is correct, the background is right and then they are merged).

If however I'm proved wrong, full compliments to them for managing to take the seemingly impossible pictures

I think a lot of the pics are taken with all sorts of wierd and wonderful frames attached to the camera car so they can get all these obscure angles, and yet still be moving.
Pretty sure I read that most of this stuff is done at about 30mph, just using a slow shutter.

I haven't seen the shots you mean (haven't seen Evo for ages), but there will be simple explanations for them. I work with some of Evo's snappers from time to time, and most are as good as they seem.

I'll find a copy over the next couple of days and tell you roughly how the particular shots were done. Like the other guy said, moving shots are usually low speed (some taken with the car being pushed and the photographer walking alongside, some even in reverse), and can involve clamps and suction cups.

Do you mean the June Evo, with the McLaren and Carrera GT? If so, which pictures of a Mini?

thats the issue, I would scan them but not sure of copyright's and what not, especially on something like PH.

The mini shot is in the section regarding low-cost motorsport (grass rallying or something), it just looks a little too good for me.

Never really occured that they might be driving really slowly makes a bit more sense but still a bit dodgy - believe my own eyes only

docevil,

i haven't actually got the latest evo mainly as i've had exams so i haven't been out near any newsagents

I've spoken to the evo team about the photos as, like everyone else it seems, i think they're fantastic and miles ahead of other mags.

I can honestly say that photoshop is only used to get rid of unsightly objects. The quality of the photos means they are good enough to go straight into the mag.

They have the philosophy in the mag to not edit photos as then they're fake, not something us punters want to see.

Unlike Autocar, who openly admit to using Photoshop (0-100-0 article... Enzo etc at Brunters... didn't happen).

Theres a guy who's got a website, supercarphotos or something. Ted did a feature on him a few months back. Check out his photos. He does quite a bit of freelance work for evo.

Hope that enlightens a few and i'm just passing on info from what the evo guys said... and i believe it

Would that be Gus Gregory by any chance?

I could quite easily buy evo just for the photos. Now me exams are over it's time to head down to the newsagents methinks.

The mini Photo is a good one, and I don't see any evidence of tampering in Photoshop, unless it is VERY well done. In actual fact, there should have been a bit of fiddling, as you can see there was a hair on the slide when they scanned it!

finally got EVO! wooooo

anyways, that mini pic.

i did work experience at evo. thats how i know about how it works.

the mini pic is actually zoomed in, thats why all the cars are in focus, the cameraman is a lot further away than you'd think.

i was watching Chee put that page together and its incredible watching them making it all work.

so yup... very good photographer with pic zoomed in on the minis

hope thats solved your headscratching

hmm, makes a little more sense then.

Still don't believe it until I actually see it, but appreciate it's not faked...
