I started using a old pc yesterday for the first time in a couple of years, got it going on my latest connection but forgot to put any anti virus software on it.

I think it has a virus, something called MSIESH.DLL is blocking internet explorer from working.
I search for the file but windows won't let me delete it.

Any ideas? I can't download AVG or anything because it has stopped explorer from working

Its not a virus, merely spyware.

Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy are what you need.

Do you have another machine you could download them to and then burn up a cd with them on?

Sounds similar to my symptoms.

See my thread about "free anti virus"
It may help you out.

Alternatively, either boot the machine in DOS mode (9x) and delete it via DOS or open a DOS Shell window and do it via DOS.

Sometimes it allows deletion, sometimes not.

Nope, Norton does viruses, not spyware. You need both/all three/four etc. A pain but there you go.
