UK Transport Minister Norman Baker said it should not be "involved" in individual cities' transport choices.

"We will not be banning cars from city centres anymore than we will be having rectangular bananas," he said.

It depends on who is involved, it is a case by case basis.

Most things are left to their own devices, others the EU offer guidelines for countries to follow and very few end up going as an advisory.

What else can be used? Those 2wheelie things are not allowed on roads or paths and I can't see a black cab driver swooping for a three wheeled bike.
Maybe horse and carriage can make a comeback.

Luckily, in Edinburgh the new tram system will be running from this year...

...oh, perhaps not -

wiki summary said:
The new tram system was originally scheduled to come into operation in July 2011, but the estimated completion date is now 2014, and will initially consist of one line running east-west across the city. Further extensions are planned. Originally budgeted at a cost of £375 million in 2003, the tram system is now anticipated to cost over £600 million.

Work on the project is currently on hold due to a dispute between the contractor and TIE the tram developer. On 3 November 2010, the chairman of trams project, David Mackay, resigned with immediate effect.

it's not just the cities... the EU wants a blanket ban on all internal combustion engined vehicles starting with urban areas.

Must be on the moondust in Brussels... there won't even be an EU in 2050 biggrin

Try the PH EU-Nonsense-ometer, in the linked article who said the following (Tory minister or EU commissioner). Score 1 for each one you get right: (Easy one to start you off)

1. We will not be banning cars from city centres anymore than we will be having rectangular bananas.
2. Freedom to travel is a basic right for our citizens.
3. Curbing mobility is not an option.
4. The widely-held belief that you need to cut mobility to fight climate change is simply not true.
5. It is right that the EU sets high-level targets for carbon reduction.
6. We are committed to decarbonising road transport.

Just a bit of fun nothing serious. wink

Bring on the Revolution - plenty of flag poles in Brussels to hang them from.

Resistance is futile frown

"The time for individual nations having its own tax, employment and social policies if definitely over. We must finally bury the erroneous ideas of nations having sovereignty over foreign and defence policies. National sovereignty will soon prove itself to be a product of the imagination." — Gerhard Schröder, Chancellor of Germany, January 1999

"Creating a single European state bound by one European Constitution is the decisive task of our time." — Joschka Fischer, German Foreign Minister, The Daily Telegraph, 27 December 1998

"This Constitution is, in spite of all justified calls for further regulations, a milestone. Yes, it is more than that. The EU Constitution is the birth certificate of the United States of Europe. The Constitution is not the end point of integration, but the framework for - as it says in the preamble - an ever closer union." — Hans Martin Bury, German Minister for Europe, debate in the Bundestag, Die Welt, 25 February 2005

Not at all.

Just because they want something doesn't mean they will get it.... Most people that I know of in the EU don't like an EU, the bottom line is that most people I know (from all nations) are fairly nationalistic....
