project gearbox
Discussion
well Now the Nob is finished for this season ive got a bit of time to plan winter 11/12 mods, a new Jetstream/tuxman engine is being put together so the next step for me is a 6 speed gearbox upgrade , i,ve been assembling parts for a short while and was luckey enough to pick up a broken Noble box , the plan is to use the Quaife diff out of that and fit it to a low milage mondeo getrag box along with a few upgrades , i would love just to get the Gearbox man to do all the work bit finances will not allow this :-( so today i made a start !!!

these are the plastic cage bearings which i would like to change to metal cage if possible , i,m hoping jetstream can help with this ;-)

you can easily see the damage !!!

diff looks in good order so of too Quaife for a service .

I was very attached to that gearbox, it let go at full chat changing up to 5th with a massive bang !
Are you going to get Quaife to check the diff ?
is the box stock ?Are you going to get Quaife to check the diff ?
what sort of power was the car running when it let go
Tux, did the bearings fail so the gearbox lost mesh and then the teeth failed ?

think Kev was running 450bhp through it , yeh as far as i can tell its std apart from the diff , there is quite a bit of play in the bearings plastic holders but there is no way off telling if that caused the problem ,all the gears look at bit warn but there is no other obvious signs , going to have a closer look once i get the bearings of and seperate the gears . Really looking forward to what you end up doing yourself Simon. I'd like to see how far you can go on your own before getting specialists involved as I'll probably follow suit to an extent.
yeh thats the big question !! think bearing removal and refit could be an issue as im wondering if you need special pullers to get them apart , fitting cooler unions should be pretty straight forward along with diff fitting , hoping Dave and Matt at Jetstream can help as well !!! TuxTuxMan said:

Do you know exactly what the gearboxman does for the money? I'd like to see a definitive list. GTO600 said:

He changes the bearings for steel race, shot pean the gears & provides connections for an oil cooler. Only viable on a low mileage gearbox. Make sure you leave plenty of time, they took weeks to get mine completed

Think you'll find they outsource the polishing and peening to some other firm but not sure who.

From memory they changed the bearings to metal from plastic on mine, outsourced the polishing and shot peening, machined something inside, machined and fitted the cooler unions, strip and rebuild labour and postage costs for about £1200.Make sure you leave plenty of time, they took weeks to get mine completed

It's the "machined something inside" bit that would be interesting to know. Other than that there's not really anything there that most of us couldn't do in the garage. I'm a professional outsourcer
Bit of a update for those that are interested , managed to pick up a 20,000 miles Noble box middle of the year so have stripped it down ready for modification work , all new steel caged bearings have been sorted and i,m due to drop all the gears off for shot peening superfinish and parts of the box are going to be cryogenicly frozen as well , this should make the gears up to 30% stronger than std !!
cooling system has been sorted , looks like im going to fit 2 x -6 returns into the top of the box so plenty of cool oil gets put on the gearset and i,m going to use a -8 outlet from the bottom to supply pump .
the gearbox casings are being cleaned at the moment ready for re-assembly and i,m looking at the possibility of treating the casings to make them stronger , not sure exactly yet but hopefully something can be done .

Do you guys have a source for individual parts like gears and synchronizers? I'd like to go through my gear box as Tux is doing, but I have no idea where to get replacement parts for the 6 speed. I don't know if it was used in any other cars available in the US.
Surface finishing and cryo treating are the easy steps.

Custom made, semi-helical, dog engagement. Should give us a little more than what you get with shot-peen/cryo/superpolish...
Is anybody driving with one of these gear sets, Jim? I'm really curious as to whether the gear noise and shift smoothness would be reasonable on the street. All the crash boxes I'm familiar with have quite a bit of gear whine and clanky shifts. I realize the Noble tips the street/race balance more towards race than most other cars, but even I have my tolerance limits.
