seat not moving back
Discussion
Strange situation.
The seat will not move back further than position 1. Selecting memory 3 luckily allows the seat to move past this point and then total control though what if I did not have this setting? I have been advised that disconnecting the battery or batteries could cause a blow in some control units in an attempt to reset everything?

What type of Mercedes have you got ? It could be either the door control module if the sest switch is mounted on the door or the seat control module which will be under the seat.
If possible take it to your Local Merc Specialist or Main dealer & get them to put it on the Star Diagnosis to check the actual values & make sure the switch is operating correctly & then carry out an actuated test to ensure all the motors work correctly. It may be worth checking normalisation of all the seat settings. This can be done either on the laptop or manually by moving the seat all the way from one end stop to to the other & then holding to switch in the end stop position for a couple of deconds.
From your description though i'd be more inclined to say you have a fault with either the door control module or seat control module.
