Hi chaps,

I haven't exactly been active on the NE section of PHers, but I thought I'd let you know that I sent this message to the Talivan folk via their website.
It got me thinking, perhaps we NE PHers could pressure the local Talivans to place themselves outside schools and shops and other places where they are more likely to save lives rather than just generate revenue. Go see:

www.safespeedforlife.com

This is what I sent to them. I wonder if they will reply?

"I am a GP working in Tyne and Wear.
I have noticed that the so-called "Safety Camera Vans" have been posted to the Coast Road and the Cradlewell by-pass. Can I ask why on Earth the things aren't posted outside schools and shops? Heaton Manor School is VERY near by, and yet the "Partnership" decides to place its cameras on safe dual carriageways. I suspect this is to so with generating revenue.
On the question of revenue, you state that the cameras are not there to make money, but then you say that "any funds left over are given to the Treasury". This is revenue generating in my book.
I save lives, can I suggest you do the same. (And no you don't have evidence to say you do too)."

Every little helps. I don't believe they care though. They're on a good thing and the Government support them, no chance they'll give up the money generation until Tony tells them to. Perhaps we should report them to their MP sighting inappropriate of equipment.

They'll argue that the reason the road is safe is because they are there

The only time I've seen Talivans in South Tyneside has been outside schools - very commendable, except that they have two great sneaky hiding spots where you just don't see them till it's too late.

well its fairly easy just stick to the speed limit ,but yep id agree stick em round schools etc , good example of recreating revenue is on the M42 xmas hols when no one was working on them new info signs 3 lane motorway with a 50 mph limit and god knows how many cameras catching the motorist , ok fine if the workers were working but they only appeared on a night time (After the hols ) . But last time i was through there over 10000 people had been caught .
10000x60 quid a few more pennies for the goverment .
now i have to remember were they have repositioned them all since the roadworks have moved ,
its just like the cameras sat on the A1 down south just in the middle of nowhere .
well its one way of getting the cars of the road everyone will be banned from driving by 2015 public transport here we come .

it's all very well saying put them outside schools, I agree that is the best place for them, but the fact remains that they do not prevent KSI's. It really winds me up when you hear the speed camera lobby say they save lives - they do not. at best, after having run over a pedestrian they make the driver think ", that's me at least £60 poorer" - and that assumes that they were travelling over the speed limit! they cannot prevent the accident in the first place.
I cannot help thinking that speeding policy at the moment is one of revenge "well you might run over a child so we'll fine you £60 for the privilege"
the answer is to better educate drivers. anyway, I accept the point of getting them off the dual carriageway...

Really? Does that work?
Sorry for the sarcastic reply, but COME ON, everyone speeds occasionally. I expect you do sometimes.

i should of said that a little better ,yep i do speed the odd time i would like to know who does stick to speed limits ,but its on the roads i know if i dont know the area i stick within a certain speed so if i do see the talivans i can reduce my speed to within the limit ,the only trouble is that the vans are looking like bloody recovery vans dont have blue lights they have nice yellow ones and marked up like them you only can tell when your past them, if i go either into a town i normally stick to the limit yep sometimes its hard to stop at say 30 mph i feel sorry for the people who have been caught doing 33mph in a 30 zone which is very easy done especially in the wedge the needle bounces all over .basically you have to have your eyes all over checking your speedo ,looking for speed traps which probably is more likely to cause an accident ,when most people see cameras they normally hit the brakes reguardless of there speed then the fun starts when one person aint concentrating.
so i would like to see cameras placed around schools and proper accident blackspots everyone must know of an area where accidents occur all the time but they never seem to do nowt withem .
cheers neil

just for info:

I'm sure you all know the Coast Road between Corner House and the Wills Building is 50 mph, not 60.

And there are mobile camera's on the 30 zone between Cowgate roundabout and Stamfordham Road.
