Now that hooning season is officially open, what's the weapon of choice?

do different radios work together as long as you are all on the same channel/ frequency?

As far as understand it, if you are on the same channel + CTCS code you should be able to hear any other PMR radio

I had good luck with my Intek MT-5050 on Sunday, It is however quite expensive for what it is but the 'export' features in this review are interesting, i need to test out the higher power bits at some-point in the near future.

On a cheaper note, I have heard a lot of good things about the binatone action 550/950s and you can get them nice and cheap from ebay (factory refurb ones)

Yep I would be looking at the Binatine end of the Market not at the Intec model

I'll only be using it when out hooning so not worried about lots of functions and features etc

I think Go Outdoors had some on special this month, cant remember the model but had a flyer at home for a special special price either last Saturday (sorry its late) or next Saturday.

Think you will find that the 8Km range quoted would be across open water
These are more likley to be 0.5w sets and if you get a much as a wasp in the way
their performance will be poor.
OK for a few hundred metres or may be a couple of Km on land with reasonable line of sight.

I have recently upgraded to 5w sets for work to replace our old motorola ones.
Went to Farnbrough Communications who are proper radio specialists and they offer
a good range with excellent back up service.

They will sell you the intek mt-5050 I have, I was going to grab it off them but they dont open on weekends and I could not make it during the week. i ended up using rocketradio.co.uk as they next-dayed it for me

Those Binatones apparently work well, keep an eye out for the 'car kit' as that comes with a 2x car chargers and in a plastic hard case, have seen em for like 30-35 quid on there

We used to use PMR radios for work (use high power licensed jobbies now) and in our fairly thorough investigations found that Cobra MT975s worked best for range and clarity.

Not far behind was the (significantly less expensive) Cobra MT800 - that's what i'd go for.

Dragging this one up from the archives - how have you got on with the 5050? I'm looking at those for range when skiing.

Another vote for these. They work fine for hoons where everyone isn't too far apart generally anyway. Cheap as chips too

I've already got a set of these, but they get a bit scratchy when the group is spread out over a mountain - I've heard the Intek can be tweaked to get better coverage over a greater range.

I didn't get a set in the end, just decided to stick with the sat nav and roar of exhausts
