SORN and re taxing

I want to re tax my car to start 1 st of april, when i go on DVLA website it tries to start the tax from 1st of march. How close to april do i need to be to get the tax disc to start??? I know they say allow 5 days for it to arrive???

Two days before I believe.

Certainly you can tax it at your local PO from two days before.

The chap at the DVLA pointed out to me that it's an offence to not display a valid tax disc, even if the DVLA records show that you've paid for one. Of course, going to the PO solves this, but then you'll presumably need your MOT, insurance and whatever form....

I just thought apply online arrives a few days before required, 1st of april go for spin. God bless the DVLA....

I went to tax my car on the 8th March at the post office after it had been on SORN. I was asked if I would like the tax to start on the 1st April, I didn't as I needed it that day. So I guess if you go to the post office you might get a few more options?

I just took mine off SORN on the 1st March. On-line I could not tax it until the 1st day of the month, I did try the day before but it would not go through. Disc took three days to arrive.

Not an endorsable offence and it would take a complete c*ck to do you under those circumstances but I suppose there are one or two out there.

Having recently done this, I was told by DVLA and Post Office that earliest I could tax car was 2 days before in a Post Office and that this could not be done online and they made it very clear that i should not drive the car before the 1st of the month...

Pretty sure that If the car has been sorn the only way to tax it again is to go into a post office - Only straight forward renewals can be done online i think.

mine was SORN but re taxed online at the begining of the month, disc arrived in two days

I remember seeing this on Road Wars. They were having a go at some guy for not displaying his disk even though he had applied for it. I am not sure if they fined him or not!If I payed for it to be on the road for that period it shouldn't matter if the disk is displayed or not as they only have to check their database. I can understand a few years back before the tech. was there but now it shouldn't be an issue.
It's just another way of getting money from the motorist.

I'm sure that it says on the DVLA website that you should just disply your old tax disk until your new one arrives in the post and it's ok for a few days..... guess this doesn't help if your car is sorn though....

I was fined £60 for not displaying a tax disc even though it was taxed. Reason for not displaying it was that I was overseas with the car, taxed it over the internet but DVLA will only post to the address on the log book hence unable to display it until I got home. Just after leaving the ferry I was pulled by the fedz and got the ticket. One copper was ok but the other was a real ahole. The OK copper tried to convince the other not to give me the ticket due to circumstances that I was unable to control, but I guess he was being a jobsworth.
