Gents,

Just ordered one of these for the summer.....without riding it, couldn't find one in stock near me.

The cycle2work scheme seemed too good to turn down. Anyone else got one? What do you think?

I already have a decent mountain bike so thought one of these would be great for a summers ride to the pub at a more leisurely pace.

Have seen one in my LBS. Not entirely sure it's something I'd want to ride, but really love the retro look.

Please note that you'll need to wear a flat cap, not a crash helmet, when riding around on it

The tricky bit is keeping your pipe lit when riding into a headwind.

No plan to wear a helmet with this! I will get myself down to a gentlemans outfitters for the flat cap, not sure how the pipe will go down though.

Its a bike that seems to split opinion. Lycra brigade seem to look down their noses at these as faddish. I think it is an amazing bit of British manufactured kit and well worth the money if the quality of the one I have seen previously is anything to go by.

Some say its over priced but you couldn't build this new yourself for less. The saddle alone would be over £150.

I love the look, but I rode one around a carpark and found it very odd handling (coming from drop bar road bikes).

Would be interested to hear how you get on with it.

they are well built but heavy as sin, the riding position is suited to little more than gentle cruising and hills are seriously hard work, that said once you get some momentum up you will fly and hell, making swift progress isnt the point of a bike like this, its fun and they attract a lot of attention so get used to answering questions.

they are highly desirable so never leave it outside even chained to a big hungry dog.

A friend of mine has one and it's great. He uses it to commute a couple of miles to work and back in the summer.

I have one..had it a year now. Its for going to the pub, commute to work on the odd Friday (25 mile round trip) or ambling to the shop.

I have the usual array of carbon road / MTB bikes and althought the riding position on the Guv is totally different, you soon get used to it.

The 28" wheels and reliable Sturmey Archer 3-speed ensure you make surprisingly rapid progress.

If anyone is considering buying a Guvnor in the Midlands region, you can hire one in Stratford upon Avon from http://traditionalcycleshop.co.uk/. You can hire by the hour, half a day or a full day and the staff are very helpful. I hired one for half a day and thought it was great, so much so I have ordered one

Is the cycle scheme still worth it? I thought HMRC had recommended a a 50% value at the end of 12 months.

I love the Guvnor, its a beautiful machine. I know of 2 that have been stolen so don't leave it anywhere even well locked.

How doe the front brake work by the way? Is it a drum brake in the hub?

It is available with a three speed hub. Yes, it has drum brakes, like postie bikes.

It comes as single speed or 3 speed Sturmey Archer with front and rear drum brakes, it's a heavy but smooth setup

Or try Linus if you want the same retro feel but for cheaper. I wanted a Guv'nor as well and although I could afford one I couldnt justify the cost.

When I enquired with Linus they didnt have them yet, from about the Summer in the UK I was told but they look pretty cool and you get the same retro feel.
