My wife's car, Yaris TS 1.5 (2003) has done 106,000 miles. Good car but struggled thro MoT with exhaust blow from right at the joint of the centre section to the back section (centre section side has the hole). Toyota want £700 for the centre (it has the CAT in it - which is working fine). They also suggest very high probability that back box will be damaged (it is the original) when they break into the exhaust so the total bill will then exceed £900. Quick Fit and the like cannot do a cheap pattern exhaust for this vehicle - they quoted £3 more than Toyota did!!)

I have found that a custom exhaust might be manufactured that allows the majority of the centre section to be retained ie the flange where its blowing is removed and a new joint is created and matched to a bespoke rear section.

All well and good, we change the rear box to make use of a modified centre section cost is about £270 for a stainless unit. Existing cat and 'old' centre section we hope continue to function.

My question is: Anyone else customised an old exhaust like this? If the centre section is on its last legs this is a waste of time and money and I should trade the car with its MoT in place. (it passed with a patch and some gunge)

I had hoped this car would run to 150k so another 2-3 years (its well maintained) and was dissapointed that the exhaust let go. The rear section I could have understood and changed it happily enough. The centre should last particularly on a high miler like this. It hardly ever does less than 20 miles, most days it does an 80 mile round trip, so internal corrosion should be minimal.....

Any comments?

Replace the whole lot with a custom made one. You can get sports cats too.

You could get a sports cat for about £100 (iirc) and a custom made exhaust system for your car for less than Toyota want for an OEM replacement!

Hi all

went with a cat-back bespoke exhaust, replicating the OEM set-up for £300. Not cheap but 1/3 whhat Toyota wanted to put her back on the road.....

Now it needs drive shaft oil seal frown

Still think its worth keeping it tho. Great little car!
