Got this from someone else. woops

Ouch. Picture it. You own a 2002 A-M DB7. All 97 grand of it. You go
down a dual carriageway with a 50 limit, and there's a stream of
50mph traffic in the left lane, poddling down to a slip road which
starts a good 4-500 yards away. Do you want to brake and let the
traffic slip by, then pull in behind, or do you boot it to get
past 'em and take 1st place?

You boot it. WHHEEEEEEE-DOWGY!! Problem: after reaching XXmph
(considerably more than the 50mph limit) you still ain't gonna get
past the first 3 cars at the head of the line before you miss the
slip road. Solution: Slam the brakes on and jump left into a small
gap between a couple of the cars, then hop right thru again onto the
slip road.

Do we see the problem? The guy at 7.15am this morning didn't. Wet
road, heavy DB7 (rwd), mucho speed, jerking the steering wheel left
whilst hammering the anchors. Oops. His car exited the carriageway
amid much screeching of emergency braking from the others, hit the
kerb at 45 degrees whilst now approaching sideways travel. The Aston
elegantly launched it's nose into the air, and slammed into the ditch
at the roadside nose-first. The silver beast was at 90 degrees to the
road, with it's rear axle a good 3 feet off the ground and the rear
wheels still turning.

We passed him just after this had happened - "lucky" s*d crashed
right by the motorway junction, where an ambulance sits in rush-hour
in case it's needed on the M-way. They must've seen the crash 'cos
before the DB7's rear wheels stopped turning they were screaming
towards him lights flashing. We didn't stop 'cos we now c*ck-all in
the way of 1st aid and didn't wanna cause another accident.

WTF was this c*ck thinking? He could've killed some poor s*ds on
their way to work! God knows how all the cars avoided him... Anyway,
I just thought I'd share this with you. So if anyone knows someone in
Bolton with a new silver DB7, you might wanna call 'em and check it's
still in one piece... That's why I love 4WD.

Hmm, you'd think so.
I was not there so I cant comment, but if he was a numpty he could have easily still lost it.

(also, the author may have added some "artistic licence" to it)

ABS only allows you to not lock wheels and to turn while braking - doesn't stop laws of physics applying, and is no use if the car is not travelling the direction the wheels are pointing!

Possibly this is an example of when having it is not a good thing?

er, anyway it says nothing about his wheels screeching...

ABS probably working perfectly then - brake hard, turn in hard, car rotates, inertia exceeds lateral grip of tyres, no traction, car continues in whatever direction it is now going in accordance with Mr Newtons principles.

Mr Newton, was he driving then?

No but it seems he was the only one in control of the vehicle.

I had this the other week. Was bombing along thinking I'll pull in front of the slow que for the slip road, then ran out of road for the manouver to be safe. Bugger. Ended up missing my turning! An imaginary old lady appeared in my head: "You won't get there any faster at that speed."

Moral: don't drive like a tit in a RWD car.

Should the moral be "Don't drive like a t*t in any car" ?

should have read the DB7 article on PH today - says something prophetic like who would want to do that in a £100k car about exactly this kind of stupid driving...

don't wish to be pedantic, but what good is four wheel drive when you are braking hard??

Not exactly sure of the physics/mechanics of it, but my old 4x4 Sierra felt a whole lot safer under heavy braking (or should that be breaking?? lololol) than my Mondeo - similar weight, similar power, similar sized brakes..... Mind you, that didn't stop me having a bit of an off at Goodwood one summer when I got it totally wrong into St Mary's... DOH!!
