Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX DG HSM

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience of this lens? Its not one i have seen before and from what i can tell its not a current lens and i know sigma have had a bed reputation in the past.

My main photographic subject is wildlife and i have a lens to do this as well as 60mm macro and 50 1.8, so most of my bases are covered. I just need something wide -> standard for the occasional landscape and general purpose use. I bought the camera body only so don't even have a kit lens!

I have found a second hand example of this lens for £200, so potentially a bit of a bargain if its a good-un!

Any advise would be appreciated, particularly if you have some first hand experience of this lens!

Its for a canon mount...

I have found an example from a online used equipment retailer, i just have no idea if the lens is any good!

Its a cheapo UWA for FF, gets 6.4/10 on fred miranda.

Seems to be OK but not spectacular. Wouldnt be my choice on a crop at all.

Fair enough. If I had the money I'd get an ef-s 17-55 2.8 but my budget is literally zero, I thought I might be able to convince myself to part with £200 but if it's no good I won't bother .

Funny 'cos it was £200 when you started!

The lens might not be brilliant but if it's designed for FF then at least a crop sensor will crop off the worst bits. But it won't be awfully wide and doesn't have much zoom range. As ever, 'YGWYP'

Get a sigma 18-50f2.8-4.5 OS or something. Step up from the canon kit lens and should be fairly cheap.

Simpo - I don't have any spare money but could probably talk myself into spending £200 if I thought I was getting a good deal. You know how it is with camera gear!

Rob - that lens is on my radar and seems to be okay

Its the ugly stepchild, everyone wants a constant f2.8 lens or even the 17-70. Not many consider it but its quite decent.

Not heard much good about it, the main problem with it though is that the similarly priced 15-30mm lens was available also, which although slower and not HSM is much better.
