Yep; as well as the 70,000lbs of thrust

The lightning managed it on 'just' 35,000lbs.

And the Lightning pilot needed a hell of a lot more piloting skill to do it as well, as there were no fancy fly-by-wire computers back in 1960 to stop it all going pear shaped.

yeah, watch the tail control surfaces (horizontal and vertical) during those manoevers and see how much work the autostab is doing !!

Prompted by those Raptor clips to see something similar from the Lightning - my next-door neighbour flew them and still talks about them enthusiastically.

It wasn't a bd to fly, it was a superb pilots aeroplane. It could be tricky to land though, in less than benign conditions (cross wind at night in the wet was a particular bum squeeze by all accounts) and it demanding to fly AND fight, which is why ex-Lightning pilots always consider themselves the cream of the RAF crop of that era.

The point I was making about the pilot skill, is true, which seems to have passed you by, in relation to aerobatics and especially rotation take-offs, which without fly-by-wire computers to help, needed at lot more finesse and skill from a pure flying point of view.

At least one RAF Lightning pilot died as a result of getting a rotation take-off wrong.

I did, I was at RIAT 2010.
