Hi guys,

Im getting ever more tempted by the prospect of getting a digital SLR (probably a Nikon D70) but id really like to try one out for a weekend before signing up for a 3 year credit agreement (the only way i could afford one!)

Does anyone know of anywhere that hires such things out? Or somewhere that sells them but would let allow me to do a test run?

Cheers

Dave

www.hireacamera.com were recommended to those going on eurohoon... might be able to help.

Although if jessops do it then go with them as they might refund the hire price...

The Jessops shops ive been in do tend to be open to a bit of haggling to seal the deal... pop into a local shop and ask.. i spent 40mins with a lady there chatting about the EOS300D... very helpful...

I WANT ONE!!!!

If you're in London you could try Fixation

I'm not sure if they have a D70 yet but worth giving them a call.

Thanks guys. I did ask Jessops if they'd lend me one, but they declined - maybe because everything i buy from them ends up being returned under warranty for breaking!!

The alternative could be to see if you could arrange to buy one on the basis that if you're not happy with it after a weekend, you can take it back for a refund.

You might have to ingratiate yourself with a member of staff first, but I'll leave figuring out how as an exercise for the reader.

Check your library ! Some of the larger ones lend out all sorts of interesting stuff.
When I considered a change up to medium format I borrowed a Mamiya for a week from Aberdeen Lib. Small deposit required but all refunded if you return the stuff undamaged. They have digital gear available too.

I've just bought the 300D as my first dSLR (in fact first SLR). So far I'm really impressed by it, the quality is superb and it seems great to learn on too (I was just a point and click monkey with an Ixus 300 before). Would really recommend one. The battery life is excellent, 1 battery lasted an entire weekend of snapping at Cadwell.

Got it from Jessops who were excellent, and like you say, they're open to haggling (even of internet sites!)

If you hire one, hire one for more than a couple of days, from what some of your posts say you will be wanting to use it quite seriously, with this is mind you wouldn't be wanting to shoot everything in jpeg. I would recommend using the cameras RAW setting. Higher end picture quality but you need to do some post processing to achieve that. A weekend with a digi slr could easily put you off them purely down to not having the time to make the adjustments required to your technique. (not massive but there are subtle differences between digital and film, mainly becuase of dynamic range). However, you wont regret it. I didn't. just my 2p.

Dave - here is a pro camera hire operation in London.

They are very good. A weekend from friday to monday counts as one days hire.

I rented a Nikon 70-200 2.8 vibration reduction, ED glass pro lense from them ( worth £1500) and the bill was only £30 or so for a weekend.
