gearbox for pinto engine
Discussion
I have a 2.0L pinto with a 4 speed gearbox, built 1981. I want to change it for a 5 speed box, I have bought a ford type 9 box.
is the type 9 the correct box?
will the splines on the box fit the clutch? spigot?.
I have noticed the engine mount is 20mm further forward on the 5 speed than the 4 speed. and the drive shaft has a rubber block not a uv joint.
will they swop over? or do I need a totaly new drive shaft?
has anyone tried to change the box on a TVR Tasmin 200?
any use full comments welcome.

The W9 (type 9) box was available with 2 different spline arrangements, so I strongly suggest test fitting the centre plate on the input shaft before fitting.
Over the years, there's been loads of guides on doing a 4 to 5 speed conversion, which detailed which donor vehicle to nick the cross members and props off
What sort of power is going to go through the box?
you may be better suited with the Borg box (T5) from the Cossy.

i am only putting 101 bhp through the box, I am trying to get as much info as possible as it would appear I have to remove the engine/gearbox to do the work. not enough room in the tunnel to get the box out. Thanks for the advice i will try and find a book or two. any more advice please post.
Type 9 from early Sierra should fit OK. You may need a clutch from a MK2 RS2000. The bell housing should fit OK, but the mounting will be in a different place, so you will either have to move the mountings on the chassis or make a new mounting plate. I think the prop will also need modifying. I have an article from Classic Ford Mag October 1999, it outlines how to do this conversion in an MK2 Escort RS2000 and covers some of the upgrade options. It does say the gears can be a bit long in the 5 speed, OK for motorway use but not great around town or track use. I have the T5 in mine but it is mated to a 2L Cosworth. It should be possible to use this box as the blocks are the same however the flywheel and clutch may need replacing. Again the G/B mounting and prop need modifying
