OK IT lads and lasses of the PH collective - Serious question time :

What is the best course of action for a laptop that has just had the best part of a mug of coffee knocked over it ?

It was working great, then decided to pick up a wireless network even though the card is turned off. It now takes an age to boot up and login.

Do I just leave it to dry out ?

I have removed the battery and DVD player to let some air through it - will this help ?

Depends.

Could already be too late.

Was it on at the time?

It was on at the time - on PH !

I'm using it now - as I say it just takes an age to actually boot up and login, once in it now appears to be OK

Absolutely. Tastes like shit.

Seriously though, if it is black & no sugar then you may have half a chance.

So should I just leave it to dry out on it's own or is there anything I can do ?

In absence of Podie, can I advise that if you are "shaking the beans" to put cling film over the keyboard to prevent accidents

I'm sorry, but I don't know. I was basing my opinion on the assumption that sugar is sticky and milk goes smelly. It wasn't based on experience or knowledge.

When I dropped my (turned on) mobile phone in to the (full) sink at work it turned itself off straight away. I took the battery off and left it on the radiator for the rest of the day until it had dried out fully. Works fine except for the side buttons which have given up the ghost.

You could try WD40 as it's a water repellant and doesn't conduct electricity.

that, at least is in your favour. IIRC its the sugar in coffee that shags 'puter parts.... leave it to dry out thoroughly and it will *probably be OK.

* standard disclaimer of responsibility if its just an ornate doorstop from now on

So using it now might not be too good an idea ?

Take as many parts out as possible - the keyboard is usually easy to remove. Leave in a warm well ventillated place for 24 hours or until you are absolutely certain that there is no moisture left.

In short: switch it off you impatient bugger!

I now have the laptop in question back up and running - I'm using it to post.

It seems to be running perfectly normally. The only problem seems to be during boot up.

The press CTRL-ALT-DELETE screen comes up really quick as does the enter password box. It then takes 3 - 4 minutes to display the 'loading personal setings' and another couple of minutes for the desktop to finish loading.

This seems far too long compared to normal.

Is the coffee incident likely to cause such a delay in logging in or have I more than likely got another problem somewhere ?

Spyware / Adware show no results neither does Norton AV, all of which are upto date.

Any assistance most greatfully received and listened to

Glad it's OK. My laptop often 'hangs' for several minutes after logging on to XP. I've found that pressing the space bar when it's hung brings it to life *instantly*, although sometimes the wireless network isn't initialised.

So I suspect your wireless adapter for this pause. That's what I blame for mine.

Try the space bar thing and let me know if it works for you.

Bonce,

Space bar makes no difference.

I've noticed it does seem a lot quicker if not in the docking station though.

Any other thoughts ?

Hmmm... Check Event Viewer and see if there are any errors, warnings or timeouts when you boot up.
