Auto Rotate - EOS 60D

Such a simple operation to master, but I don't appear to be able to - or rather the camera can't.

I like to have my camera set up so whenever I take a vertical/portrait shot that the image is rotated when previewing in camera and on the PC. So, in the menu I have the 'auto rotate' set to 'ON - camera and PC'. However, my images are not rotating and I find myself turning the camera to see them and having to manually rotate them on the PC.

It's now becoming annoying so I seek the wisdom of fellow PH's.

Your settings seem right, try a master reset and re do the options?

I have not changed my 50D settings for a while, if the 60D is the same there are three settings, rotate off, auto rotate, this if I remember rotates the pic for viewing on the LCD, it gives a narrow vertical view of pics taken, then if my memory serves me, there is a third setting, this will give you a full size pic on the LCD screen, but will auto rotate pics for your PC download.

The camera re-orientation should work (I assume, don;t have a 60D but it works on my other canon kit) but I have found sometimes it decides not to or is slow enough in responding that it seems like it is not going to work before I need to move on to the next shot. There is an orientation sensor built in to the body. It may be that this is not activating for some reason. I suspect that the way the camera is held when rotated may influence things but I have never been bothered enough to experiment.

As for on the PC - what application are you using to view? Some will understand the information about orientation from the file, some will not. What are the steps you take when moving the images to the PC?

This is, of course, assuming that the internal settings are not scrambled for some reason.

Just to check, heres how this should work...

• If you look at the back of the camera for the 'instant review' then it won't be rotated. That simply shows exactly what the sensor captured.
• However if you hit the play button, then they should be rotated round to the right direction.

Is that what you are experiencing?


Whoops - just re-read your post and you said they aren't rotated on the PC either?

Id try a complete firmware upgrade, and if that doesn't work then it might be a hardware issue?

I've just started getting into photography so I might be talking rubbish but on my GF1 the image stabilization is done in the lens rather than the camera body. That means that if I have a prime lens on (like my 20mm pancake lens which doesn't have OIS) then the auto-rotate feature won't work. If I put a zoom lens on (with OIS) the auto-rotate will work.

Don't know if that's how the EOS 60D functions but just a thought.

Hi Guys,

thanks for some interesting responses there. I'll have to get some definitive answers by trial and error.

One other thing, aside from the auto rotate option there's also, on another menu page, a 'rotate' option. I believe this allows you to rotate them manually as, when you press it, it goes into play preview mode and you can skip through the images. Is this anything I need to be doing?

As for PC: software was just windows explorer and windows picture viewer.

I don;t think any of the regular MS products are intended to look at the file data and do anything about rotation - although they do provide rotate buttons to do it manually BUT if you do my understaning is that it modifies the file which will reduce quality. So make sure you have a backup file somewhere or, better, use a decent (often available free) photo viewer for an enhanced experience.

Canon's usually come with the Zoombrowser application and that should understand any orientation information included in the file when the shot was taken. Plus much more.

I don't think I ever had a problem when using the 350D - autorotation was on, took pics, card out, into PC, copied to HDD. Viewed in explorer and all images already rorated.

Also, I think changing the rotation manually (in explorer and/or viewer) corrupted the images and prevented them from being viewed once back back on the Camera.

I need to find time to take some shots - I'll also duplicate the tests to see if anyhting different happens when using Win7 and XP.
