Its Aldi's spin off Jacobs Creek - I actually think its better in a back to back test... about £3 per bottle too!

Okay its not great, but the name more than makes up for it!!

This Pinot is very nice

£10.49 from corner shop, around £9 from Supermarket.

Faustino Rioja is rather good, prices vary from £7-14 usually.

My current favourite supermarket red is Asdas Vinalba Malbec Syrah, 9 quid ish a bottle.

If you want something very easy to drink, Campo Viejo rioja is in most supermarkets and it's often half price in Sainburys.

Oh, and Casillero del Diablo is high on my list of preferred reds too. Shouldn't be more than about £6-7 a bottle.

If you can get hold of Rosemount Shiraz it's a very good red, slight hint of chocolate and raspberry!

If you're starting on red then you need to start light.

Ignore shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, south of france, rioja etc just now and start out on:

new zealand pinot noir ( currently £5 half price in asda)
beaujolais / fleurie / gamay from france
bardolino from italy

these are all really mild but very nice reds.

Try merlot / chianti / rioja / pinotage or a cab sauv/shiraz blend next.

The whole point is that if you want to like cheese, you don't start with a strong blue roquefort. You start with something pleasant and simple and build up.

Thanks for this tip - that's not far from us either and I think I'll pop along for a tour + tasting.

The tour was excellent and has given me a real appreciation for what an English vineyard can produce. Normally I wouldn't have looked at wines from here, but their Dark Harvest and Bolney Reserve really are wonderful. It's just up the road from me too, hence the visit!

A really good way to spend a day, and I also found their rosé and sparkling to be superb - normally I'm not a fan of either..

I like Shiraz or a Cabernet/ Shiraz blend - Hardys Crest is very nice (C/S and Merlot I think). Less than a tenner and easy to find.

Another vote here for Campo Veijo... If you're new to reds Rioja's a great place to start, and Campo's consistently good IMHO!

It's very tasty. One of my local vineyards too :-)
