Are there any restaurants on the cusp of michelin starred quality in York? Recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is only the Blue Bicycle which has been consistently good for many years. J Baker's was getting some rave reviews early days. He was the Queens personal chef I believe and was the chef at Pool Court in Leeds when it had a Michelin Star. Personally though I prefer the atmosphere and the food at the Blue Bicycle. Good old fashioned surly attitudes (which I don't mind as long as the food and service stack up). There are no other fine food establishments in central York TBH (but I'm sure others will disagree with me). The fact is, any good Yorkshire Chefs of note would only choose BB if in town.

Middlethorpe Hall & Spa, just next to the racecourse. It's in the Good Food Guide, and if the amazing Sunday lunch I had at the weekend is anything to go by then you'll be in for a treat.

The ambience is very Downton Abbey and the service impeccable. And I'm very fussy.

Definitely worth a look.

I'm not sure about michelin star quality, I'm not aware of any in York. However, there are some nice places to eat. Off the top of my head; Meltons, J Bakers is really nice - I really enjoyed the tasting menu. Blue bicycle been mentioned - I've eaten here a few times, food is good but not outstanding and last time I went I wasn't overly impressed and thought for the money it should have been better. Recently I tried the lime tree and that was excellent. No 8 is supposed to be good too. Depends what you're looking for really. Leeds may be worth a look - Anthony's has a good reputation - tasting menu again, I hear is very good.
