Excuse my (potential) ignorance, but, did Sony not bring Blu-Ray to market originally?

Sony did make the Blu ray, but it looks like LG claim to have some link regarding playback, maybe something to do with software.

It does look a little tit for tat, but it seems like there are very big stakes at hand.

Lik-Sang had to shut down over imports a few years back. Lik-Sang were offering PSPs from Japan months befor the UK release so Sony slapped with them with suits in London, Tokyo and HongKong.

No, the original was developed by Philips/Pioneer/Sony.
Then they founded the BR Disc Association, consisting of Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG (Lucky GoldStar) Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung.

All of them having patents in it.

Tbh it's just tit for tat and I don't feel sorry for Sony as they brought this on themselves.

Think you've missed the point somewhat

You'll end up hanging by your own belt if you do that, like the chaps what tried the same a few years ago.

Most likely they'll software cripple Bluray playback on new ones until it gets sorted out.

But unlike the Xbox360, PS3 owners won't need a ready stock of replacements at hand when they get the red ring of death. wink

It'll cover them legally until they've paid LG enough money though.

Ouch! Although to be fair, I do have 2 x xbox360s that have broke so I'm using as spares laugh
