The other half's company has put broadband into our place. They have supplied a Linksys wireless router, but they won't let me turn the wireless on. Is there another box I can buy to put on the network to allow me to connect wireless PC's to it? I don't want to mess with their kit - been in trouble before!!!

Wireless Access Point.

Just plug it into a spare ethernet port on the switch/hub and away you go.

A bit of a shame that you can't turn wireless on. Worth checking to see if they have setup VPN on the box (If you can as I am not sure of the model you have.) Ie. When you connect to the internet are you going through your partners company internet connection. Ie. Any internet traffic from your home will be monitored.

If they have simply setup a VPN client on your partners PC then you don't have to worry and could simply plug in a wireless access point. I presume that they have setup DHCP running on the Linksys so you would automatically get an IP address etc.

I'm pretty sure the model is WAG54G. I cannot get into it at all to check the settings - I don't want to factory default it as it will probably never work again!

I think I am going to have to buy another access point and plug it in the back of the linksys.

I have a WAG54G. Don't understand why the company have turned wireless off. As Plotloss says, you need a separate access point. Linksys make a matching product, the WAP54G, available here. Version 2.07 firmware has been released, which I understand has negated the reviewers comments.

Excellent, thanks for that. I will get one of those bought.

Not sure why they have turned of the wireless, they (the IT gestapo) say it's for security, but I think it's so they don't get loads of support calls from users saying it won't work from the end of the street etc

Yep, thats usually why I turn it off Its a also a similar reason as to why I dont encourage PDA's for non tech staff. Until I'm allowed to double the number of support staff then thats the way its gonna stay too!
