Presume this is the place for this.

I've recently moved into a property with no TV aerial. We (Mrs DR10 and I) have rather quickly got used to no TV and think we will keep it this way.

Has anyone else completely stopped watching TV? What benefits have you found? Has to be good for children in the long run too?

Also, can I just cancel my direct debit for the TV licence straight away?

Cheers,

What long run? Once they've left home, grown up and had a chance to get over all the torment they faced on a daily basis at school because they didn't see <insert latest TV programme> the night before?

I've had a good look at the TV licence thread on PH and the TV licence website and I wouldn't be breaking their rules.

No, not at all.

I'm called Mark, not Martin!

When I lived in Devon a few years back, I only had a TV for the Playstation and DVD's. Didn't watch live TV (and no iplayer / catchup either back then) or any live broadcast for about 8 months.

Did not miss it really. Only got a TV again because I needed to share the house to afford the rent, and it was easier to get a lodger in with a TV license than without.

If someone turned round to me tomorrow and told me that I would not be allowed to watch live TV again in my life, I wouldn't be that bothered. I only have it now because the license fee doesn't bother me and its easier if we have friends and relatives over to stay.

Haven't stopped altogether, but hardly watch anything now. Cancelled Sky as it's quite expensive if you're not really using it.

Watch the news, and use Lovefilm for movies.

Still can't decide whether TV is just ste now, or whether I am getting old.

I see what you mean with your last statement. I'm not sure either. I think the use of the Internet has meant I am too used to choosing what I do/watch/interact with and television just doesn't work like that.

In the way that they say that if you are watching iplayer etc online you are watching TV especially if its a live stream.

It does for me. I rarely watch a programme as it's broadcast; my digibox records everything for me to watch at my leisure.

TBH, even as a child, whilst I watched considerably more TV than I do now, I would always be outside or doing something else, given the chance. Maybe TV's just not my bag, baby!

I do enjoy a good film now and then, though.

Well films are a different thing (in my eyes) and I do watch plenty of those (but not on TV).

Cheers,
i cancelled my licence 2 years ago. since then, the only tv i've watched [via internet] has been peep show, mad men and the odd top gear.

i don't miss it at all. i watch lots of films though and have enough other things going on to occupy my time. i still scan the tv paper in the sunday supplements but find there's very rarely anything i'd want to watch. i can't think of anything worse that sitting in front of the tv night after night just watching what's on.

one thing i do miss is the news. i read the times every day but find moving images much more powerful/informative when things are like at present.

I very rarely watch tv - there's only so many repeats of Top Gear and QI I can handle. 90% of the time the tv is used for games and dvds

I check out the news on the web, so no problem there. I also use Apple TV for on-demand films, plus job-lots of DVDs from eBay. A rainy day is therefore covered.

Any idea about the direct debit cancellation?
