Anything better for the money, looking at second hand about 6 years old.

Criteria are

Total costs, i.e. sevicing and fuel, doesn't look like its beaten by the ugly stick, comfortable for wife and kids and isn't too slow when I use it.

Yes there is something much better.

It is the Golf 2.0 GT Fsi 5 door.
150 bhp.

Smooth quiet free revving engine with good performance.

Averages 40+ mpg on motorway runs.
Average 35 mpg normal driving.

And the best bit, the bit that makes it a sensible purchase v's the oil burner;

It costs about £1500 less to buy an equivalent age/mileage used Fsi GT than its inferior to drive Tdi sister. So unless you are doing huge mileages per year its always the cheaper option.

Oh, and it doesnt have a rattly old 4 cylinder engine that sounds like a tractor at idle.

About 15K ish. We already have 2 cars I consider better than a golf (e46 touring and saab aero). The whole point of the purchase is to reduce costs on the family car. 35mpg is pretty rubbish for a compromise car. Might as well put up with 25 we are getting from the beemer.

By the time you've bought, taxed and insured the Golf it's going to take an awful long time to break even isn't it?

Plan on selling both cars, so tax / insurance etc come into it too. Plus other cars both about 10 years old now. My wife is putting about £80 of fuel a week into the beemer. If we can double the fuel economy that works about about 2k a year, so not long at all on a 8K car.

My error, thought this was another car being added to the fleet smile
