Is it reasonable to ask for a loaner in this case ?
Discussion
The local VW dealers did this for my wife without her even having to ask, they offered it while apologising for the delay in delivery. They even held the number plate that she had requested when given a choice by the dealer a month earlier. This wasn't even in relation to an order for an expensive car, a £7000 Fox.
They should be bending over backwards!

Talk to them.
You seem to be reasonable (unlike some of the hotheads on here
) it's not in the garage's interest not to deliver the car. It is generally known that there are supply problems at the moment so i would be surprised (nay stunned) if you went somewhere else and found a delivery date or physical car.
I've had this situation (from the other side) as have a few others on here - we're usually able to sort something out. Maybe there's a p/ex with some tax on it? since the rules changed on cashing in tax discs there may be used cars on the pitch that are still taxed - try that. In these cases a bit of latitude may be required if they have a customer on the car but these things can be got round.
If you do decide to try the having your deposit back route, be prepared to go through with it - if they can't supply there's not really an alternative.
It is a pain at the moment...
It is disappointing however that they haven't been speaking to you regularly - that is probably a sign that the build was going backwards and they were hoping to be able to do something before they had to tell you. Human nature, sadly, means we don't like giving bad news.
As regards the price issue, i would certainly make the point that having been told you must take delivery before a certain date (which cannot be met) you ought not to be expected to pay any more...

Personally, I'd be the calmest, most understanding, person BMW UK's customer service team had spoken to all week. See if there's anything they can do to "help out" their dealer from central stock... even if it's one of their ex-fleet cars perhaps?
I'd be confident that, once they realise the frightful inconvenience they're causing someone who was looking forward with great anticipation to their new car, they would at least try to make the problem go away. If they didn't, well, I'd vote with my feet.
In my experience most folk in CS jobs actually do want to help and in some cases can do more than you think. And helping out a reasonable fellow has got to beat the hell out of listening to yet another ranter!

Surprising... I seem to recall them loaning a mate of mine a 7 from central when his M was off the road.Perhaps worth another go? After all, you've spoken to the dealer and they seem to be struggling a little.... and you are wheel-less due to their screw up (after all, you only sold the old car in order that you could pay them for a brand spanker).
