Hi PP yes Rob D they have just had a faily nasty looking earthquake 6.3 on the Richter scale looks to be quite a lot of structural damage.

We did not feel it in Auckland, but they say the church is now destroyed and maybe loss of life as well but still too early to tell.

i was out there a few years ago and stayed in a hostel just round the corner form the cathedral. that really put things into perspective.

As for our choice of hotel for a transit stop.... I assume this is the before picture...

Just had a look at he clip on the beeb news page. Scary stuff.

Have spoken to the family back home and while everyone we know seems safe at this stage, the town is a mess. A lot more damage than last time.

What hasn't made it to the media is large areas of liquifaction (read: sinking+flooding) around the city.

80% of the town is without fresh water, however power is on in a large number of places again this morning.

Communication is getting tough to some areas as the power to cell towers has gone and their batteries are drying up so mobile coverage is dropping.

Can anyone contact Rob just to check if he's ok? I'm hoping that his absence is just him getting stuck into assisting family/friends etc and forgetting about PH and any concerns from our way or being without internet.

I dropped him a mail last night (don't have his number any more) but obviously there may be lack of power, connectivity etc.
