Drinking Too Much Water??
Discussion
Hi all,
I've got a bit of a weird question... Is it at all possible to train your body to require more water than others? I've always been a pretty big water drinker, and tend to go through a pint in the morning, a 3 pints or so at work, then another couple at home before bed. I've never really seen this as an issue, but I've noticed lately that my friends seem to drink far less than me.
I don't mind that, but as a result, they all seem to be able to go a good while without a drink and don't experience any ill effects. Me though, if I don't keep drinking at a pretty regular rate all day, I feel dehydrated and start to get a headache. This is intensified with hangovers or any other times I might expect to be dehydrated.
So what I'm wondering is, could I have somehow trained my body to depend on more water, so when I take it away it throws a hissy fit? Or is this pretty standard?

Not wishing to worry you, but drinking a lot and still feeling thirsty is a classic sign of diabetes. Might be worth getting it checked out?
Yep. Get that checked out.Once you discuss with your doctor (or nurse practitioners nowadays
) they may do some other tests as well.I'm exactly the same. I drink more water than anyone i know, typically not as much at the weekend, which is when i'll often get a headache, so i often think my body has been 'trained' to expect a lot of fluids. This has been the case for over 25 years now, since i had a kidney stone as a teenager.
I don't have diabetes though!

Same here, about a pint and a half of water before work, 2-3 pints at work, then 4-5 pints in the evening. My OH drinks approx. one pint a day. If I go on a long car journey, I'll have to stop and buy some drink. It's not that I'm thirsty, just a bit of a dry throat/start to get a headache.
Been tested for diabetes and nada. Guess I'm just a thirsty one.

how old are you, and any family history of diabetes? do you urinate roughly what you take in, and does your urinate concentrate if you don't drink for a while, or does it still stay pale (best way....is it darker in the morning than afternoon?)
how old are you? - 25any family history of diabetes? - None at all
do you urinate roughly what you take in? - Yes
does your urinate concentrate if you don't drink for a while? Yes
Good questions there, I'd say from that that I'm fine??
people with diabetes insipidus dont concentrate their urine, however, those with diabetes mellitus do. Unless your properly obese, dont do any exercise and have a crap diet type 2 diabetes mellitus is unlikely. You'd most like have known about type 1 by now, but it could be possible if relatively mild.
There are other causes of polydipsia (abnormal thirst). I'd still go to gp and at least have a urine analysis, they may do a blood test too. Worth doing in my opinion.
However, if its only up to 3litres per day, you're talk and a little big, then wouldnt worry about it too much. Either way, i'd still get it checked out :-)
Ross.
Edit, is it water you're drinking? Lots of caffeine will increase water intake.

Yeah I think I will, thanks for the input. For the record, I'm not fat; I'm 6'3", 32" waist, broad shoulders but don't do much excercise at all at the moment - though I am looking to start again soon as I'm feeling unfit! I'm trying to consciously not drink so much this week and actually I feel fine. I think its habbit more than anything. There are other causes of polydipsia (abnormal thirst).
