Hey people, bit of a random question here, but my dad and I were talking and he said it used to be legal to use a CB when driving and it could still be. I'm assuming it doesn't come under the mobile phone law. I know you could still get done for not driving with due care and attention but is it legal to use one when driving?

Cheers all smile

obviously you have to buy a Trans-am to go with it, Smokey and the Bandit style wink

I think you can use 27Mhz gear legally e.g. 2 Way radio.

I'm not sure of the exact wording, but yes - radio equipment does not come under the mobile phone laws.

Doesn't mean you can't be done for careless/dangerous driving though...

The mobile phone laws specifically state that it is illegal to use anything that broadcasts on the mobile phone frequencies. CB, PMR (those motorola and similar little walkie talkies), Tetra, and things like taxi radios are all not covered by this deliberately.

I use CB in my car, nice to talk to passing truckers sometimes to kill boredom on the road.

Haha nice one. Thanks all, that's all cleared up. Definitely going to whack one in my first car (whatever that may be).

Yep, I use amateur radio in my car, I recommend buying a hands free kit for it though, it's a lot easier. Mine cost me £30 and is worth every penny.

Talking on a radio certainly does ease the boredom. If you find yourself getting tired of CB, think about trying amateur radio, vie never looked back.
