What the hell do car sales people use on the cars?

I bought a cheap used car, looked fine, first time I washed it some dull patches appeared and it became obvious some lacquer had pealed away.

Do they have some special super thick wax to cover the rubbish paintwork or something?

Perhaps they washed it very gently!
