The Governor has decided to push a bill that would end or severely curtail collective bargaining for unions there. This is what he ran on and the majority elected him. The protests seen on TV are actually oppossed by the majority of citizens; therefore, they support the Governor's efforts. The Dems, who are supported by unions, see themselves in a fix not wanting to vote at all as they may ps off their voters. To facilitate this, they have done a runner (as ErnestM has described on another unrelated thread) so as to not be there when voting occurs. I have spoken to an insider counterpart in that state who says the law allows for the Governor to send the State Troopers to retrieve them and force them back to carry out the legislative duties they campaigned for, were elected to do, and took an oath to perform. The Governor has chosen that option. Let's see how it goes. The people's will be done. biggrin

Are they allowed to vote "present" in the manner so loved by their gifted leader?

Tell me there is not media bias to the left. CNN, et al are screaming how this is a violation of their human right to be in a union. WTF? Human right to be in a union? How about this; you pay 5% more for your retirement fund and 12% more toward your healthcare insurance or you get laid off your job; now which do you prefer? The news pisses me off.

Oh, there are some other tidbits of info....

- "Organizing For America" (which is the leftovers of Obama's 2008 campaign people) are now involved with the demonstrators and are stirring the pot

- It has been revealed that most of the teachers make upwards of $100k per year for working 10 months out of the year

- The "solution" espoused by the protesters is to "raise taxes"

- The teachers that are protesting have all "called in sick" so that they can attend the demonstrations (which is against the law)...

- ...the teachers have also asked their students to join them demonstrating (wonder how the parents feel about that?)

- The teachers are in violation of thier current contract and subject to being fired

and to top it off (drum roll please)

- Jessie Jackson has now shown up

This comedy is writing itself....

biggrin

The state lawmakers are calling into the Governor's office and the police stations claiming the cops are beating on their doors with warrants and they are fearing for their lives. hehe STFU and go to the office and carry out a vote like you were elected to do and took an oath to carry out.

Thanks for that Ernest. The news is painting this as the evil GOP against the freedom-loving Dems. Such BS! The majority of the people elected the man to do just what he is doing.

It's funny that, but I was only just thinking the other day that when the residual Egyptian protesters (who stayed behind in case the government was going to re-nege) were surrounded by police after the main demonstration, the call went out and 2000 odd back up protesters appeared in short order. The organisation to moblilse people at short notice reminded me of the flying pickets we had some years back when the unions had their teeth well and truly buried in the UK, and industrial action and unrest was rife.

Looks like it's come full circle, with the Wisconsin protesters taking the organisation lead from the Egyptians!

It's funny, the Governor told them that he would either have to do this (have the public sector workers pay a bit more and have their raises - raises? - indexed to cpi) OR he could furlough (read - "make redundant", "fire", "terminate with extreme..." you get the idea) 6000 public sector employees...

...the employees response - "Do Neither!" "Raise taxes. Have the taxpayer dig deeper and pay more"

What these folks don't realize is, the well is dry. There is no more blood available from that particular stone. The parasite has almost killed the host. Etc. Etc. The Democratic senators know it. That's why they ran.

This is not going to be able to be spun by the media IMO; this is going to be seen for what it is. Good, I say.

I like that, rather a lot.

I think we should have just such a system in the UK. Then Gordo McWinky Broon won't have been able to stay at home writing his book instead of fulfilling his responsibilities by turning up to the House of Commons and taking part in the legislative process. rolleyes

Also, are CNN as bad as the BBC? And teachers on $100k. No st they're protesting!

What will be interesting is if the media gives it equal coverage.

I have read one report that asked "What took them so long..." Well, considering that most of the folks supporting the Gov were actually working when this started, it had to wait until the weekend...

I've never thought that government workers should be unionized. Seems a clear conflict of interest and goodness knows if they get broken I can't see anything but a benefit. I only wish my idiotic and corrupt state would do the same.

That being said majority rule is irrelevant. This is the US and we allow for demonstrations, protest, and that our basic system of democracy is built to support minority influence. So let them fight it out. It's how the system works.
