Great article in this month's EVO (044) testing (quantitatively and qualitatively) Shell's claims for Optimax.

They found:
- it cleans up inlet valves so improving combustion efficiency
- improves measured performance
- subjective improvements in smoothness, response and driveability
- a slight deterioration in fuel economy

They tested the fuel in a Civic Type-R, BMW M Coupe and Jaguar XJR-R back-to-back with non-Optimax unleaded (1500 miles with each).

Seems to match what I have found using it - perhaps this signals an end to the debate?

Whatever the cars had been run on before: CTR mostly supermarket UL, Jag & BMW a mixture of UL & occasional SUL.

A few weeks ago I travelled from Dumfries (SW Scotland) to Doncaster with bog standard U/L.

Before the return journey I filled up with Optimax.

The car run smoother, pulled better from low revs, and seems a little more economical depite the average speed being higher and at one point being close to the manufacturer's book top speed for a very sort distance.

Well done shell.
