Would you have a bottle of wine to yourself in a restaurant?

Would, or does, anybody here drink a bottle of wine to themselves when in a restaurant? Reason I ask is because my other half is a non-drinker and I enjoy a fine glass of red wine with a meal. Problem is that very few restaurants sell the better wines by the glass so if I want to have some good wine i have to buy the bottle. There also comes the problem of not wanting to leave any of the wine as you've usually payed a pretty penny for it.

So, your in a restaurant, you fancy some fine wine but you have to take the bottle. What do you do? Settle for the house red or just buy the bottle and drink it yourself.

I have no problem drinking a bottle of wine in a restaurant if the O/H is not drinking

Drink it yourself. No problem with that at all, unless you plan on driving afterwards.

I'd have no reason. What are you worried about? Other peoples opinions? Sod that. You'll probably never see them again!

Besides, if you go for a meal, someone usually has to drive so the non-drinker is the driver.

Being a Neanderthal proper Northerner, I don't drink wine, but if I did, I would drink the bottle myself Not only that, but being a northerner I would also wring the bottle out to make sure I got every last drop

My wife and I had two bottles (Stellenbosch - Laibach 2008 Merlot) between us on Valentine's Day in our local inn. I think she drank 2 glasses...

Nothing wrong in it. I do tend to feel conscious after a while that I don't want the sober party to think it's the drink talking, though. Especially after you've fallen off your chair a couple of times and been sick down your shirt.

Go somewhere that does a wine tasting menu to go with each course.

Or drink the whole bottle.

I mostly drink red, the mrs mostly white, in a nice place we would order 2 bottles

The issue comes when you've finished your first bottle and fancy another glass. That second bottle can make a right mess IME (I got down on one knee and proposed after 2 bottles of Rioja)

I was in Las vegas last year and as my colleagues were flying home a day earlier than myself I went to dinner in one of the steak houses on my own. When I selected the wine the waitress returned with a glass of it. I then explained I wanted a bottle and she did remark that she should have guessed as I was english.

I also have a friend who is senior in IBM UK that only orders wine two bottles at a time even when there are only two of you at the table. When you get close to finishing the first two he orders another two..........

I would have no problem ordering and drinking a bottle to myself. Most likely that everyone at the table has different preferences anyway, why not all have a bottle of something you like?
