I've been seeking a cheap barge and went to look at a 1998 E300TD today. It drove fine, except for a slightly lazy shift on the slushbox.

Pros: The interior is leather and in good nick barring a grubby driver's seat and steering wheel, good quality tyres with lots of life left and newish discs and pads suggest the PO looked after it and it has a new MoT.

Cons: Galactic mileage(176k but TBH it doesn't bother me), heater/AC fan's on the fritz(someone's tried to bodge it with a dangly wire with a switch on the end but it no workee), alarming rattle at idle from (I think) the camchain, and four crusty wheelarches(the front spring pans look good though and the underside is clean).

Have I lost my mind?

Where have all the replies gone? confused

Apropos the title, but another W210. As per this thread; my mate got a bit of a fright when he looked for insurance quotes so he has asked me if I want it. It's a 2001 Xreg E430 Elegance estate more or less fully loaded, the mileage is 152k and presumably genuine(don't know why you'd clock it and leave it there). Cosmetically the arches are blisterfree but there's rust staining visible, the usual swirling, a few deep scratches here and there(especially on the rear bumper under the tailgate) and a palm-sized dent in the rear offside wing. Inside you wouldn't know it's done 52k let alone 152k. It's got a FSH, what's it worth? I don't want it enough to pay for Glass's online, Parker's and Whatcar online suggests 1.5-2k which seems reasonable, if rather more than I want to pay for what will be a 'run until it breaks' snotter.

In July I bought an E230 auto on 200k miles, sounds similar to what you describe, interior looks mint, has got some tin worm on the arches and doors, but nothing structurally. I've since done 6k miles in it and it pulls well and never skips a beat and I can imagine it going on for another 100k miles no bother. I paid £400 which was very cheap but 1.5-2 sounds high for the mileage, even taking into account the difference in engine size, imo.
