Just thinking on the way home tonight, had an old people carrier infront of me.. Kids moving around in the back and the parents chugging away on cigarettes paid for by my taxes. When they took their final drag, they flicked the still lit butt out of the window, towards the cars on the other side of the road and the passenger into the lane next to us.

Now I've heard of that story of the butt flying into the scuttle panel of the car behind and setting light to the filter and then the whole car, and I think this is pretty plausable.

Those of you that smoke in the car, do you care where you chuck the end when you've finished? Do you put it out in the car instead? (I'd be very suprised if anyone done this..) And do you not think its littering? By Courteous I mean towards the edge of the road, or when no one is next to you.

p.s Mods I think this is the correct place, although I'm thinking it might get moved to health.. No idea why but over to you wink

God, I haven't smoked in the car for years.

I only have one or two when my smoking friend comes to visit. (smoking in both senses of the word)

When I did I suppose I was courteous.

I would open the window, hold the butt out and as low down as I could and let go of it. Not much chance it could fly up and hit anyone elses car. And I never, ever did it when there was a bike or convertible behind me.

Through me having a job, and them not.

Well.. I assume they don't. Kids not strapped in, car that looks like an MOT failure and they pulled off towards the "nicer" area of town.

Why? Is it a pre-requisite of being a smoker that you must also be inconsiderate?

I hate smokers who use the outside of their car to dispose of cigarette butts. Hate it. Hence why I exclusively use the ashtray, even though it makes my car stink a bit.

I would be more angry about them smoking in a confined space with their kids.

Because I work at a dealership, drive I'd say between 5-10 cars a day and I've only seen a handfull of cars ashtrays used.

I agree with you in that case. That is disgraceful. I have always used my ashtrays, even though it stinks my car out.

I am a smoker, my car and I smell like smoke. It's how it is. I have accepted it, others should too.

Always use the ashtray in my car... It's common courtesy not to chuck litter all over the place.

OP: maybe you should have a tab - you seem a bit 'tense'.

There is a cigarette lighter in my VX but no ashtray. Wonder where Vauxhall wanted the ash/cigarettes to go...

Hmmm. I'd love to say I don't chuck the tabs out of the window and litter - but I do. Mainly because using the ashtray makes the car smell (and then I'd get busted by the lease company for smoking in my car!!)

However, I will only throw a cigarette butt when there's nothing around me - especially at night when the sparks kick up off the road at speed.

All the same, it's littering - courteous or not.

I smoke roll-ups. When finished I roll the dog-end between finger and thumb into a small biodegradable ball about half the size of a pea and then it goes out the window. I figure that counts as option 2.

That counts asputting more effort into repairing the road than the council.

I smoke, but nowhere near my car.
I don't even let people stand beside my car when the door's open & they're smoking hehe

So, everyone that smokes and doesn't have a car that meets your exacting standards is a dole scrounger then?

I'm assuming that you don't get out much?

No, but I'd go with these people being on the dole.

If you don't agree, that's fine.

Ah yes, it's always best to jump to conclusions. I think you're a pikey.
